3.3 Listening Tarea 3: Eight Statements from One Monologue (Matching Beginnings and Endings)

Key Takeaways

  • Tarea 3 has eight items: eight short statements (15–25 words) from one monologue, matched to eight of eleven endings.

  • In the Modelo 0, a student describes her Spanish-class classmates; names 11 to 18 are matched with letters A to L, including the example.

  • Each statement is played twice in a row, with 10 seconds after the first hearing and 5 seconds after the second.

  • Endings usually paraphrase the statement: 'habla con todo el mundo' points to 'es sociable', and 'siempre hace los deberes' points to 'estudia mucho'.

  • Three endings are unused distractors, and some repeat a detail from the wrong person or the wrong place.

Understanding Tarea 3: One Speaker, Eight Statements

In Tarea 3 you hear one person speak about people, places or objects that are very familiar to them. The monologue is split into eight short, separate statements, each of 15 to 25 words. On the page you have eight sentence beginnings (for example, eight names) on the left and eleven endings on the right. You match each beginning to one ending, so three endings are not used.

Exam ParameterTarea 3 Specification
Items8 (Modelo numbering 11–18)
InputEight short explanatory or descriptive statements from one monologue, 15–25 words each
DomainPersonal (people, places, objects)
OptionsEleven endings for eight beginnings (twelve letters in the Modelo 0, including the example)
RepetitionsEach statement is played twice

What the Modelo 0 Shows

A young woman describes her classmates at a Spanish school. The left column lists their names; the right column lists endings such as es sociable, estudia mucho, es de Francia, quiere ser escritor, hace deporte por la tarde, ve muchas películas, es el más joven de la clase and desayuna en la escuela. The example says that John is from the United States, matched to es estadounidense. Each later statement is about one classmate.

The Timing Inside the Recording (Modelo 0)

For each statement: the statement, 10 seconds, the same statement again, 2 seconds, Seleccione la letra correcta, and 5 seconds. After the eighth statement you have 40 seconds to complete the answer sheet. Because each statement is repeated immediately, you can decide item by item.

Why Endings Are Paraphrases

The speaker rarely says the exact words of the ending. Instead, the statement gives evidence for it. These are the kinds of links the Modelo 0 uses:

What you hearThe ending it supports

Traps in the Unused Endings

  • Opposite meaning: a shy classmate who habla poco en clase must not be matched to habla mucho.
  • Right activity, wrong place: in the Modelo 0, one student organises the end-of-course party at the school, while an unused ending says organiza fiestas en su casa.
  • Mixed origins: a student with a Japanese name who is French, because her mother is from Japan, matches es de Francia, not a Japanese nationality. Listen to the whole statement before you choose.

The Category Method

Before the audio starts, read all eleven endings and sort them into categories. This turns eleven options into small groups you can search quickly:

When a statement starts, decide which category it belongs to (origin? character? routine?) and check only that group. Then confirm the detail on the second hearing and cross off the letter.

Useful A1 Language for Describing People

  • Likes and plans: Le gusta mucho el cine. Quiere ser médico. Quiere estudiar piano.

Practice Set: Marcos Talks about His Family

Read the endings first, then match the statements.

Answers: 1 → E (Laura studies medicine at the university; do not choose A just because medicine and hospitals belong together); 2 → A (enfermero + los enfermos); 3 → C (London = abroad, en el extranjero); 4 → G; 5 → B. Endings D and F are unused, just as three endings are unused in the real task.
