Long Document/Audio Pairs and Time Management

Key Takeaways

  • The 総合聴読解 sub-section pairs one longer document (program, financial table, invitation, minutes, manual) with a longer audio, and multiple questions refer to the same stimulus.
  • Pre-read for 10–15 seconds in this order: title/type, column and row labels, totals and footnotes, then predict two or three likely questions.
  • During the audio, identify three anchors: who is speaking, who is reading the document, and which row/column/item the question targets.
  • Reusable traps are wrong-row, first-guess (the rejected tentative answer), label-swap (売上高 vs 経常利益, 前年比 vs 前年同期比), and verbal-detail-vs-final-decision.
  • Time budget: ~30 minutes for ~25 questions ≈ 70 seconds each; pre-read between questions and mark-and-move within 60 seconds if stuck.

Long Document/Audio Pairs and Time Management

The 総合 (comprehensive) sub-section is the heaviest part of Part 2. One longer document — typically an event program, a financial-results table, an invitation, meeting minutes, or a manual — is paired with a longer audio. Multiple questions refer to the same stimulus. The official sample set has five questions hanging off a single document/audio pair. Time you spend understanding the document once pays off across all five.

Pre-Read Strategy (10–15 Seconds)

Before the audio begins, scan the document in this order:

  1. Title and type — is this a ceremony program, a 決算表, an 案内状, a 議事録, or a 手順書? The type tells you which fields to expect.
  2. Columns and row labels — read every header and every row label. For a 決算表, note which company is on which row. For a program, note the order of items.
  3. Totals and footnotes — the small print often holds the disambiguating fact (which company had 前年同期比プラス despite an overall loss).
  4. Predict two or three likely questions — for a 決算表, predict "which company matches X?" For a program, predict "where is the customer's greeting?" For a 見積書, predict "which field changes?"

If you have not finished the scan when the audio starts, keep one eye on the document while you listen. The audio will name the speaker, the reader, and the target row or item.

During the Audio: Identify Three Anchors

  • WHO is speaking — two colleagues? a manager and a subordinate? an outside caller?
  • WHO is the document being read by — the speaker may say 「
  • WHICH row / column / item the question targets — the audio will name a company, a date, a button, or a row label. Write that target down immediately.

Common Document Types and Their Cues

Document typeJapaneseLikely questionCues to scan
Where does X's item go?Order, breaks, speaker labels
Which company matches the description?Row labels (A社/B社/C社/D社), columns (売上高/経常利益/前年同期比)
Who is invited / when / where?Date, venue, dress code, RSVP
Meeting minutes会議議事録What was decided?
What is the next step?Numbered steps, warnings
Which field changes?Row labels, totals, validity

Trap Patterns in Long-Pair Questions

  • Wrong-row trap — an option quotes a real cell but for the wrong row (wrong company, wrong date, wrong button). Always confirm the row label before reading the value.
  • First-guess trap — a speaker proposes a tentative answer that the other speaker corrects. The wrong option matches the first guess; the correct option matches the final answer.
Memorize these pairs; they are the single most reused label-swap on the BJT.
  • Verbal-detail-vs-final-decision trap — an option matches a detail the speaker reads aloud but contradicts the decision reached at the end of the dialogue.

Worked Example: Four Game Companies' 決算表

The document is a table of four game companies (A社, B社, C社, D社) with columns 売上高, 経常利益, 前年同期比. The audio describes ヤマト: "the company is in the red this period, but year-on-year the figure is up." Two colleagues confirm it.

Reasoning:

  1. "In the red" → 経常利益 is negative (赤字).
  2. "Year-on-year the figure is up" → 前年同期比 is positive (プラス).
  3. Scan the four rows for the row where 経常利益 is negative AND 前年同期比 is positive.
  4. Suppose only C社 has that combination: C社's 経常利益 is a loss, but 前年同期比 shows a plus.
  5. Trap options: A社 has 前年同期比プラス but is profitable (matches only half the description); B社 is in the red but 前年同期比 is flat or negative (matches the other half only); D社's 売上高 grew but 経常利益 is negative (label-swap: 売上高 vs 前年同期比).

Correct: C社.

Worked Example: Ceremony Program

The document is a 式典プログラム with several items, including two 講演 (lectures) and a greeting by ベルトン社社長. The audio is two office workers deciding where to insert the customer's greeting. The worker first suggests "after the opening," then revises: "no — let's place it right after the two 講演 so the customer can leave early."

Reasoning:

  1. The first guess ("after the opening") is rejected — it is a first-guess trap.
  2. The final decision is "after the two 講演" — that is the second item, the third item, or the item after the second 講演 depending on numbering. In the official sample, this lands at position 3.
  3. Cross off any option that quotes the rejected position. Cross off options that quote a real 講演's slot (label-swap). Cross off options that put the greeting before the lectures (final-decision trap).

Correct: Position 3 (after the two 講演).

Time Management for Part 2

Part 2 runs roughly 30 minutes for about 25 questions. That is ~70 seconds per question, and audio for the next question may begin almost immediately after the previous one ends.

  • Pre-read between questions — the moment a question ends, switch your eyes to the next document. Do not pause to reflect on the previous answer.
  • Mark and move within 60 seconds — if you cannot decide, eliminate two options, pick one of the remaining two, and move on. Lingering costs you the pre-read of the next question.
  • Note-taking template — keep a 4-column grid on scratch paper: Who | Document type | Question focus | Decision/answer. This grid doubles as a checkpoint if a later question refers back to the same stimulus.
Time budgetAction
0–5 sPre-read document (title, axes/headers, units, period)
5–15 sPredict the question; finalize hypothesis
15–45 sListen; tag the target row/column; note the final decision
45–55 sEliminate traps; pick answer
55–70 sIf stuck, eliminate to two and commit; eyes to next document

Strategy Checklist

  1. Pre-read every document for 10–15 seconds before the audio.
  2. Tag the speaker, the document reader, and the target row/column during the audio.
  3. Beware the first-guess trap: the answer is the final decision, not the first proposal.
  4. Beware the label-swap trap: 売上高/経常利益, 前年比/前年同期比, 単価/総額.
  5. Budget 70 seconds per question; pre-read between questions; mark and move on within 60 seconds.
