4.3 総合聴解問題: Workplace Dialogues and Meetings

Key Takeaways

  • 総合聴解問題 plays a 60–90 second dialogue once and asks one question about a decision, problem, concern, next action, or proposal.
  • Common question types are 決定事項, 問題点, 心配事, 次の行動, and 提案内容.
  • Decision-signal phrases include じゃ、〇〇でいきましょう, そうね、〇〇がいいわね, and わかりました、〇〇します.
  • The official sample shows that correct answers may combine two distinct actions (e.g., bring in an outside auditor AND reduce directors); partial answers are trap distractors.
  • Note-taking should use a four-column grid — 決定, 理由, 条件, 次のアクション — set up before the audio starts.

4.3 総合聴解問題: Workplace Dialogues and Meetings

The 総合聴解問題 (integrated listening task) is the longest of the three Part 1 sub-sections. An illustration of a business scene is shown; a 60–90 second dialogue is played once; one question is asked; four options are read. The question asks about a decision, a problem, a concern, a next action, or a proposal. Per the official kanken.or.jp sample, correct answers may combine two distinct actions (e.g., bring in an outside auditor AND reduce the number of directors) — partial answers are trap distractors.

Common Question Types

TypeSample Japanese phrasing
決定事項役員の体制をどうすることにしましたか/いつにすることにしましたか
問題点何について話し合っていますか/どんな問題に取り組むことになりますか
心配事女の人は何を心配していますか
次の行動このあとどうすることになりますか
提案内容どうしたらよいと言っていますか

Read the question stem carefully during the pre-roll. The stem tells you which listening signal to prioritise.

Dialogue Genres

  • 内部会議 (manager + subordinate): most common. Decisions about 体制, 業績, 予算, スケジュール.
  • 社外相談 (employee + consultant or mentor): often about strategy, market entry, customer credit.
  • 顧客対応 (店長 + 店員 or 営業 + 顧客): complaints, returns, special requests.
  • インタビュー (employee + interviewer): career, company direction, recent initiatives.
  • 見本市・展示場相談: booth setup, display readiness, scheduling.
  • クレーム対応: apology, cause, remedy.

Speaker-Role Identification

From the illustration and the opening words, identify roles within 10 seconds:

  • 上司 signals: じゃ、〇〇でいきましょう/そうだね/わかった、〇〇して
  • 部下 signals: はい/かしこまりました/〇〇についてご報告します
  • 社外 signals: お世話になっております/〇〇社の〇〇と申します
  • 顧客 signals: 〇〇についてお聞きしたい/〇〇はいつになりますか

Mis-identifying the speaker role is the root cause of the right-verb-wrong-subject trap. Always confirm who decided before tagging an option as correct.

Decision-Signal Phrases

The correct option usually corresponds to a phrase the speaker uses to commit. Listen for:

  • じゃ、これにするか
  • じゃ、〇〇でいきましょう
  • そうね、〇〇がいいわね
  • わかりました、〇〇します
  • それでいこう

These phrases are typically uttered by the senior speaker near the end of the dialogue. The final commitment phrase overrides earlier proposals.

Concern-Signal Phrases

For 心配事 questions, listen for:

  • 〇〇が心配で…
  • 〇〇はまだ…
  • 〇〇が間に合うかどうか…
  • 〇〇だとすると、〇〇が…

The 心配 phrase is often voiced by the junior speaker (部下, 店員, 担当者). The answer paraphrases the worry, not the decision.

Contrast-Signal Phrases

Often the correct option requires distinguishing two proposals:

  • AではなくB
  • Aもいいですが、Bのほうが…
  • しかし/ただ/もっとも

Contrast signals almost always mark a trap: the first-mentioned A is the bait, the second-mentioned B is the decision.

Trap Patterns

  • Detail without decision. An option restates a number, name, or condition mentioned in the dialogue but does not answer the question (e.g., names the worry but the question asks the decision).
  • Worry vs. decision contradiction. An option matches the stated worry but contradicts the final decision.
  • Right verb, wrong subject. An option says 課長は〇〇することにしました when in fact the 部長 decided.
  • Half-decision. An option that captures one part of a compound decision (e.g., outside auditor only) but omits the second part (reducing directors). Per the official sample, the correct answer combines both.
  • Reversed contrast. An option names the A that was rejected, not the B that was chosen.

Combining Signals: A Worked Example

Consider an official-style dialogue. 部長 says the company should reduce the number of directors to streamline decision-making. 課長 responds that an outside auditor should also be brought in to strengthen governance. 部長 closes with じゃ、その二つでいこう. The question: 役員の体制をどうすることにしましたか.

The correct option must include BOTH reducing directors AND bringing in an outside auditor. A trap option that lists only one is the half-decision trap; a trap option that adds a third element not in the dialogue is the invented-content trap.

Note-Taking Strategy

Before the audio starts, set up a four-column grid:

決定理由条件次のアクション

Capture only what fits each column. The question type will tell you which column matters. Use abbreviations (部 for 部長, 課 for 課長) to keep up with audio speed. Do not write full sentences.

A Worked 心配事 Example

Consider an exhibition-hall dialogue. 課長 says the booth design is finalised. 店員 responds: 設営業者が明日の夜までに搬入を終えられるか、それがいちばん心配です. The question: 女の人は何を心配していますか.

Step 1 Identify speaker roles from the illustration: 課長 (senior) and 店員 (junior, female). Step 2 The worry phrase それがいちばん心配です follows a specific worry — 設営業者の搬入が明日の夜までに終わるか. Step 3 Answer: 設営業者が搬入を完了できるかどうか.

Trap options likely to appear:

  • ブースのデザインが決まったか (this is the 課長's stated fact, not the 店員's worry — right-context wrong-subject trap).
  • 来場者の数が足りるか (related exhibition worry but not voiced — invented-content trap).
  • 設営業者の選定が適切か (a different worry not in the dialogue — substitution trap).

The 心配事 answer must paraphrase the worry the junior speaker voiced, not any plausible related worry.

A Worked 次の行動 Example

Consider an internal-meeting dialogue. 部長 says: 営業部の体制作りは来週一度保留にして、まずは顧客の信用状況の再調査を優先しよう. 課長 replies: かしこまりました、今週中に再調査の段取りを進めます. The question: このあとどうすることになりますか.

Step 1 Identify the action that follows from the decision: 信用状況の再調査を優先. Step 2 Identify who acts and when: 課長, this week. Step 3 Answer: 今週中に顧客の信用状況の再調査を進める.

Trap options likely to appear:

  • 営業部の体制を今週構築する (the deferred item, not the prioritised item).
  • 保留にする (this is the decision state of the other item, not an action).
  • 顧客の信用調査を来週行う (right topic, wrong timing — the 課長 commits to this week, not next week).

The 次の行動 answer must match the prioritised, immediately-committed action — not the deferred item and not a wrong-timing variant.

Pacing and Recovery

If you miss a phrase, do not stop to reconstruct it — the audio continues. Tag the next phrase you hear and keep going. A missed phrase is one column entry lost; stopping to reconstruct means losing the rest of the dialogue. Mark your best guess from what you captured.
