4.1 場面把握問題: Photo Scene Comprehension

The 場面把握問題 (scene-grasping task) is the opening sub-section of BJT Part 1 聴解. A single business photograph appears on the test screen; four short audio statements are read aloud once only. You choose the one statement that best describes what is actually visible in the photo. There is no second hearing, no written transcript, and no time to deliberate after the audio ends — the answer sheet must be marked within roughly 10 seconds before the next photo loads.

What the Photographs Show

The photos depict recognisable Japanese business scenes. The official kanken.or.jp sample shows two people exchanging business cards (名刺交換) and two people talking while looking at a computer (パソコンを見ながら話す). Other recurring subjects include signing documents (書類に署名する or 押印する), talking on the phone (電話で話す), making copies (コピーを取る), serving tea (お茶を出す), carrying boxes into a meeting room (荷物を運び入れ), reading a noticeboard (掲示板を確認), getting on or off an elevator (エレベーターに乗る or 降りる), giving a presentation (プレゼンする), and receiving visitors (接客する).

Pre-Audio Scan Strategy

Before the audio begins, you have roughly five seconds to scan the photo. Use that time deliberately:

1. Count the people. Is it one, two, three, or more? Are they standing, sitting, or both?
2. Identify every visible object. Laptop, paper, phone, coffee cup, whiteboard, projector, box, name card — each one is a candidate keyword.
3. Read any visible text. A wall clock, a sign, a screen, or a document heading may appear; the audio will often paraphrase it.
4. Note body orientation. Who is facing whom? Who is pointing? Whose hand is extended?
5. Predict three or four candidate verbs before the audio starts.

If you enter the audio with a clear mental list, you will recognise the correct option immediately rather than parsing Japanese on the fly.

Predicting Vocabulary

The audio uses business verbs that frequently appear in JLPT N2/N1 materials. Practise these until recognition is automatic:

話す, 話し合う, 確認する, サインする, 押印する, 受け取る, 渡す, 交換する, 見せる, 操作する, 入力する, 配布する, 説明する, 案内する, 対応する, 取り組む, 運び込む, 出す, コピーを取る.

Many of these verbs pair with fixed particles: 名刺を交換する, 書類に署名する, 電話で話す, パソコンに向かう, お茶を出す. Recognising the verb-particle pair as a single unit speeds recognition under time pressure.

Trap Patterns

BJT distractors are not random — they are engineered from the photo itself.

• Right object, wrong action. The photo shows a man holding a pen over a document. A distractor says 書類を読んでいます when the visible action is 書類に署名しています.
• Right action, wrong subject arrangement. Two people sit at a laptop. The correct option says 二人でパソコンを見ながら話しています; a distractor says 一人がパソコンを操作しています (right verb, wrong subject arrangement).
• Similar-sounding verbs. 書類 vs 写真, 署名 vs 捺印, コピー vs コンビニ. These exploit kana confusion under time pressure.
• Plausible but invisible. A distractor describes an action that could happen in the scene but is not actually visible (e.g., reporting the result of the meeting when the photo shows the meeting itself).

Elimination Workflow

Use a consistent elimination workflow:

1. As each option plays, mentally tag it: matches, wrong object or action, or unclear.
2. Cross out anything that names an object NOT in the photo — this kills roughly half of all distractors instantly.
3. Among the survivors, check the subject count and body orientation against the photo.
4. If two options survive, choose the one that names a visible verb over one that names an inferred action.

Mini-Dialogue Practice

Read the photo, then listen for the matching description.

Photo A: Two men in suits stand facing each other; one extends both hands holding a card; the other receives it with both hands. Expected audio: 男の人が二人、名刺を交換しています。

Photo B: A woman sits at a desk with a laptop; a man in shirtsleeves leans over pointing at the screen. Expected audio: 女の人がパソコンに向かって作業していて、男の人が画面を見せながら説明しています。

Photo C: A man in a vest holds a stack of cardboard boxes; he is stepping through a doorway. Expected audio: 男の人が箱を会議室に運び込んでいます。

Common Particle and Verb Cues

Each photo subject pairs with a small set of particles. Recognising the particle-verb combination speeds recognition under audio:

Recognising the wrong particle (e.g., 箱を運び出す when the photo shows 運び込む) is one of the highest-yield elimination skills in this sub-section. The particle tells you the direction of the action, and the photo tells you the visible direction — they must agree.

Time Budget

Each 場面把握問題 item is timed tightly — about 12 seconds from the start of the audio to the next photo appearing. Do not write full sentences in your notes; one keyword per option is enough. If you cannot decide within 3 seconds of the audio ending, mark your best guess and move on — unanswered items are scored as incorrect. The pace of Part 1 does not slow down for hesitation.
