About the BJT Exam
The BJT Business Japanese Proficiency Test (BJTビジネス日本語能力テスト) measures the practical Japanese-language communication ability needed in real business and workplace situations. It is administered by the Japan Kanji Aptitude Testing Foundation and delivered year-round as a computer-based test through Pearson VUE. The exam has 80 four-option multiple-choice questions across three parts — Part 1 Listening Comprehension, Part 2 Listening & Reading Comprehension, and Part 3 Reading Comprehension — and takes about two hours. Unlike the JLPT, the BJT has no pass/fail mark; instead it reports an IRT-scaled score from 0 to 800 mapped to six levels from J5 (lowest) to J1+ (highest). Content focuses on workplace Japanese: keigo (sonkeigo, kenjougo, and teineigo), business dialogues such as phone calls, meetings, customer service, and negotiations, interpreting charts, graphs, and tables, and reading business documents like emails, memos, reports, and notices. There are no speaking or writing production tasks. Because results never expire as a snapshot and the test runs on demand, candidates can retake it to demonstrate improvement, observing a mandatory three-month wait between attempts.
