Two Qualities, One Crowded Floor
Muscular strength is high force. The usual teaching bias is higher relative load, fewer repetitions, longer rest so the next set is still a high-force set.
Muscular endurance is repeating submaximal contractions. The usual teaching bias is lower relative load, more repetitions, shorter rest.
A mixed drop-in group class, as Chapter 5 already flagged, usually delivers muscular endurance as the default product: 12–20+ reps, music-driven tempo, limited rest, shared bells. You can bias a block toward a heavier, slower, fewer-rep strength-endurance hybrid when you actually have load options and honest recovery. You cannot honestly run a one-repetition-maximum test in this room. There are not enough spots, not enough bars, and not enough identical relative loads.
Hypertrophy — gaining muscle size — sits in the middle of many teaching tables: enough load, enough repetitions, enough proximity to fatigue, enough weekly work. A group floor can contribute. A 45-minute circuit with one pair of 8-pound dumbbells for every body is not automatically a hypertrophy program just because the marquee says sculpt.
SAID still applies. Light bouncing pulses in a quarter-squat are not a substitute for a hip hinge if the stated objective was posterior-chain strength-endurance.

Tempo is a programming knob you still own when the 25-pound pair is gone. - Staggered sets. Partner A works; partner B rests and watches with eyes, not with unsolicited hands. They share one pair.
- Opposite patterns only if demo quality survives. A rows while B does a bodyweight squat, then they swap tools — not if the room becomes a collision.
- Timed stations. 40 seconds of work, 20 seconds to rotate, two people per station, a bodyweight twin posted at every station.
- A load menu, cued as choices. Heavy / medium / light / bodyweight. Never as a ranking of character.
- Substitutions you named before class. If the 20s are gone: goblet with a 15, slower tempo, pause, or a harder bodyweight version such as a split squat or wall sit. Not just wait and get cold.
Never make the only legal version of an exercise require a tool you do not have enough of. That is how people steal a bell they cannot control, or how they stand still until the song ends.
Fatigue Management
Fatigue is the point of endurance work and the enemy of high-force technique. Teach both.
Local muscular fatigue is the quad burn after you stacked squats, lunges, and step-ups. Systemic fatigue is high heart rate, short speech, and whole-room form sag.
Watch for:
- The hinge becoming lumbar flexion
- Knees collapsing inward on the squat
- Shoulders shrugging to the ears on a press
- Faces plus breath-holding (Valsalva) as the default
- Bouncing and shortening range to make the count
- People racing the clock instead of finishing a repetition they could describe
Responses that stay in a group instructor's lane:
- Regress the room: shallower depth, shorter lever, slower tempo, drop a load option.
- Change the pairing: after a squat block, go to a pull or an upper-body pattern, not another lunge.
- Insert actual rest: a demonstration, a sip, a 32-count march — not a rest that is still a plank jack.
- Stop a pattern that has become a safety problem. Push through lumbar flexion for the last eight is the wrong answer.
Push/pull and upper/lower alternation is how you keep local quality in a 45-minute circuit. Eight quad-dominant stations in a row is not leg-day excellence. It is a fatigue pile-up.
Breathing and failure
Cue exhale on effort. Rhythmic breathing is default coaching in mixed rooms. You do not need to diagnose hypertension to refuse breath-holding as a personality.
Training to true concentric failure with a barbell in a packed class is a spotting and drop-risk problem. Train to quality near-fatigue — a repetition or two in reserve — for most mixed hours. The person who wants a harder stimulus takes a heavier option, a slower eccentric, a longer pause, or a split-squat — not a dropped bar.
Task B: Select Strength Work That Matches the Objective
Task B of class design is selecting exercises, and the variables around them, that serve the stated objective and the people. If the objective is muscular endurance of the posterior chain, choose hinges and hip-dominant patterns, a repetition range people can repeat with a spine that still looks organized, and rest that is short enough to tax endurance without turning the hinge into a yank. If the objective is general strength-endurance, cover a squat pattern, a hinge, a push, and a pull, each with a regression.
Do not select a movement because it is on a social-media reel. A kipping pull-up in a first-timer lunch class fails purpose, safety, and for whom. A goblet squat with three depths and three loads can serve a mixed room.
