1.2 Credential, NCCA Accreditation, and 2020 Domains

The letters after your name are AFAA-CGFI, not a generic group-fitness certified phrase and not the GFI certificate title. Those letters attach to an NCCA-accredited certification program. What NCCA Accreditation Means — and Does Not Mean

NCCA is the National Commission for Certifying Agencies. It audits certification programs against published standards: job analysis, item development, cut-score process, security, and recertification policy. When AFAA-CGFI is described as NCCA-accredited, it means the certification program met those process standards. It does not mean:

• that a third-party study site is approved, reviewed, or partnered with AFAA or NASM
• that the non-proctored GFI certificate is the same exam
• that you can skip CPR/AED or eligibility
• that every practice quiz on the internet used the same cut-score method

Policy for the AFAA-CGFI program sits with the Certification Governing Board (CGB), an independent board described in the Candidate Handbook as overseeing eligibility standards, exam development and scoring, recertification, and disciplinary appeals. NCCA accreditation is why you should expect a closed-book, proctored, psychometrically developed exam rather than a homework packet. Because the exam is built from a job analysis, stems prefer job tasks: what a competent instructor does on the floor. Which of the following is the best next action when a participant reports sharp pain is a model CGFI item. In what year was AFAA founded is not. Because forms are equated, you cannot game an easy form rumor. Because 20 pretest items are hidden, you cannot skip the last 20 as experimental. Because passers do not see a number, you cannot reverse-engineer a raw cut from a friend's pass email.

2020 Job Analysis Versus 2016 Weights

2016 weights (superseded — do not use as current): 32% / 28% / 28% / 12%. If a blog or an old PDF still prints 32/28/28/12, it is printing the prior job analysis. A five-point drop on Domain 1 and two-point rises on Domains 2 and 3 change how you budget study hours. Professionalism also ticked up from 12% to 13% — small on paper, enough to matter if you skip ethics, music licensing, and referral.

On a 100-scored-item exam, 27/30/30/13 are weights, not a promise that every form prints exactly 27 Domain 1 items. Pretest items can sit in any domain and still not count. Study all four domains. Do not drop Domain 4 because 13% looks small. Thirteen percent of a scaled professional exam is enough to fail a candidate who is otherwise strong on choreography.

How the Four Domains Show Up in a Sitting

Domain 1 items ask whether you understand the body well enough to choose a safe, effective group move — motor units, planes, energy systems, heat illness — not whether you can recite a medical textbook chapter. If a stem asks which tissue is overloaded in a poorly cued hinge, you are in science.

Domain 2 items ask whether you can plan a class: objective, format, movement-prep language, load, music appropriateness, equipment shortages planned in advance. If the stem puts you at the desk the night before, it is design.

Domain 3 items ask whether you can run the room: anticipatory cues, regressions when someone is shaking, virtual camera limits, when to stop a set. If the stem puts you on the mic with people already moving, it is instruction.

Domain 4 items ask whether you know the edges of the job: referral, copyrighted music, consent for tactile cueing, incident reports, recertification. If the stem is about what you are not licensed to say, it is professionalism.

A single stem can touch two domains. A prenatal modification is science plus instruction. Answer the actual question: if it asks what you say on the mic, treat it as instruction; if it asks which tissue is overloaded, treat it as science. Do not pick the answer that sounds most medical if the question is a coaching choice.

A study-hour heuristic from the 2020 weights — not a required AFAA hour formula — is that if you have 10 focused hours in a week, roughly 2.7 go to science, 3.0 to design, 3.0 to instruction, and 1.3 to professionalism, then add extra time on your weakest domain from practice. Exam-Only Versus Course Packages

You may sit exam-only. AFAA's current exam-information page (opened 2026-09-18) directs that purchase through 1-800-446-2322. Course packages on the AFAA Group Fitness Certification page start at $299 (same check date). Packages may bundle textbooks, coaching, or practice. Useful for some learners; not a requirement to sit and not a substitute for knowing the four domains.

Confirm current exam-only and retake prices with AFAA. Do not lock $249 / $149 into memory as official live-page figures. Those amounts circulate on third-party listings and were not confirmed on the live AFAA exam-information page as of 2026-09-18.

Enrollment remains 180 days from purchase whether you bought exam-only or a package. Opening a course on day 170 does not automatically extend PSI scheduling to day 170 plus another 180 — read the purchase terms. Completing an AFAA self-study module is also not the same event as a PSI score report. The credential letters follow the NCCA exam, not the last video in a package.

PSI delivery — test center or live remote — is part of the certification exam path. Remote is still a live proctor. It is not an open-book certificate sitting.

Recertification Is a Different Clock

Passing is not a lifetime license. The credential is valid 2 years. Recertification requires 1.5 CEUs = 15 contact hours every two years (1 contact hour = 0.1 CEU; older handbook language that said 15 CEUs was labeling contact hours, not 15 full CEUs), current CPR/AED, and an application plus fee. The recertification guidelines PDF lists $99; confirm on the AFAA site because fees change. Recertify for Life / NASM One may waive an administrative recertification fee but not CEUs or CPR/AED. A 180-day grace period appears in the handbook; late-fee figures in the guidelines PDF ($30 up to 90 days / $50 after grace and before 1 year) should be confirmed on the live site before you budget them.

The intro point is simple: NCCA programs typically require ongoing competence. Use AFAA-CGFI after your name only while the cycle is current.
