The 6:02 a.m. indoor-cycle room is still filling. Two riders are clipping in. One person is still sliding a saddle. The instructor, worried about losing workout time, opens with a 32-count all-out standing climb. Three faces go gray. A calf cramps. That is not a brave main body. That is a failed movement prep, and independent OpenExamPrep CGFI teaching treats it as a class-design error, not a motivation win.

Movement Prep Has a Job, Not a Nickname

Chapter 7 named the hour's three big pieces: movement prep, main body, and transition. Older marketing language said warm-up and cool-down. The job did not change. The first block exists so the main body is possible: tissues warmer, joints moving, muscles that will work actually awake, and the day's patterns already practiced at a size people can control.

Four programming jobs sit inside that block:

  1. Raise core temperature, muscle temperature, heart rate, blood flow to working tissue, and ventilation.
  2. Activate the muscles that will produce or stabilize today's work, without pre-exhausting them.
  3. Mobilize the joints through the ranges this class will use, with control.
  4. Rehearse the actual class patterns — including direction, equipment, and the lower-intensity option — before you add load, impact, or speed.

Sweat is not the pass/fail test. Readiness is. A person can glisten from a hot studio and still be unprepared for a jump they have not practiced.

A common industry teaching range for this block in a 45–60 minute hour is about 5–10 minutes. Treat that as a heuristic, not an unpublished official minute chart. A 30-minute express class still needs a compressed version of all four jobs. Older adults, cold studios, orthopedic stories you will not diagnose, and high-skill choreography often need the long end of the range — or a slower ramp inside the same clock.

Raise: Make the System Available

Raise is general-to-specific rhythmic work at low-to-moderate intensity. Blood redistributes toward working muscle. Heart rate and ventilation climb. Joints that were still start moving; synovial fluid is commonly taught as less sluggish once a joint is taken through motion. You do not need a lab thermometer. You need faces that look more ready than they did at the door, and patterns that have not yet become a test.

Format-specific raise:

  • Indoor cycle: easy seated spinning, light gear, a cadence people could talk over. Do not start on a standing hill.
  • Floor cardio: marches, step-touches, easy grapevines, arm swings that are not yet punches or plyometric jacks.

Cue exhale on effort even here. Breath-holding during a just-a-bridge set is a bad habit you will not want later under load.

Mobilize: Range You Will Actually Use

Mobilize is dynamic range: controlled movement through the joint actions the main body will demand. Hip openers and reverse-lunge reaches before deep squats. Thoracic rotation before wood chops or bicycle-style patterns. Ankle dorsiflexion rocks before step-downs. Shoulder circles or wall slides before anything overhead.

Ballistic bouncing into end range on cold tissue is a mixed-room trap — stretch-reflex plus poor control plus a packed floor.

Mobilize this format. A sun-salutation series can be a beautiful yoga raise; it is a weak primary mobilize for a seated indoor-cycle hour if nobody then pedals. A 30-second hip rock off the bike can still help if people clip back in and spin through a similar range.

Rehearsal: The Pattern Should Not Be a Surprise

Rehearsal is the piece items love because it separates a generic pulse-raiser from class design. Before load, impact, or peak speed, participants should already have done a smaller, slower, lower-impact, or unloaded twin of the day's key patterns.

Rehearsal includes room logistics that prevent collisions: which way the room faces, the participant's left versus yours, where the step lives, how two people share a bench. If the first time anyone shares a bell is during a timed race, you programmed chaos.

What a Bad Warm-Up Looks Like on Items

Build a mental gallery. The wrong instructor:

  1. Skips movement prep to protect workout time.
  2. Opens with long static stretching of cold tissue as the whole block.

  4. Uses unrelated patterns — pilates hundreds, then a cycle sprint class with no pedal rehearsal.

  6. Uses ballistic stretching or uncoached plyometrics as the raise.
  7. Lectures while the room stands still in the cold.
  8. Offers no impact, range, or load options, so the older adult and the jumper get the same first-song jack.

The AFAA 5 Questions still earn their keep as a filter without turning this into a slogan poster: What is the purpose of this first block? Are people actually raising, activating, mobilizing, and rehearsing? Does the opener create safety problems (cold end-range, first-song max, collisions)? Can they keep the pattern for the duration of prep? For whom is this opener appropriate — and who needs the march, the shallower squat, or the seated-only cycle start?

Programming the Block on a Clock

Frequency, intensity, time, and type

Frequency of movement prep is every class. Intensity starts low and ramps. Time is long enough for the four jobs. Type matches the format. That is FITT applied to the opener, not a second class.
