Three Words, One Purpose Test
Regression — a planned easier version of the same purpose. Jumping jack → step-touch jack or march-out jack. Push-up on toes → push-up on knees or against a wall. The pattern is still recognizable. The cost dropped.
Progression — a planned harder version of the same purpose. March-out jack → jumping jack → squat jack. Wall push-up → kneeling → toes, or a slower eccentric. Harder is not “add a circus.” Harder is a bigger dose of the quality you named in the intro.
Modification — a purpose-keeping change that may be easier, lateral, or constraint-based: seated instead of standing, unilateral instead of bilateral, shorter range, a wall for balance, a different tool that still trains the pattern. All regressions are modifications. Not every modification is a regression. A half-kneeling press instead of a standing press can be a stability modification for someone who can load the shoulder but cannot own the standing position — that is not the same story as “make it easier because they are unfit.”
The test is AFAA Question 1: What is the purpose of this exercise? If the featured purpose was cardiorespiratory travel, a static hamstring stretch is not a regression. It is a different class. If the purpose was a squat pattern, a sit-to-stand or a shallower squat still belongs. A biceps curl does not.

Plan Them Before Class — That Is Task G
Write the menu on the plan as if the room will include a first-timer, a trained regular, someone who will not jump, someone who will want more load, and someone whose knee does not love deep flexion — because that is a drop-in group.
A workable paper line looks like this:
- Featured: jumping jack (cardio, frontal plane)
- Regression: step-touch or march-out jack, same arms
- Default mixed-level: jumping jack at a height they can land
- Progression: squat jack or faster arms — not both on the first upgrade
- Modification for no-jump / cranky knee: step-touch, smaller range, hold the wall if balance is the limiter

Cue language belongs on the plan too, because “hard version / easy version / wimp version” is how you rank character. Independent teaching uses options, versions, choose the one you can repeat with form. You do not point at the back row and announce their orthopedic story. Chapter 6 already set the special-population rule: observe, modify, refer — never diagnose. Prenatal, older adult, and post-rehab participants get named options, not a clinic from the stage. If someone asks whether a move is medically legal for their condition, that is referral, not a Task G paragraph.
Do not wait for failure to invent the menu. Live adaptation still happens — someone arrives with a wrist wrap you did not expect. Task G is the baseline menu so you are not composing under a chorus. Showing up with only the hero move and hoping charisma will cover it is how mixed rooms get injured or ignored.
Complexity Versus Impact Versus Load
The instruction-domain knowledge list later names variations for complexity, impact, and fitness level, with examples such as adding or removing arm movements or jumping, and push-ups on knees or toes. Independent CGFI planning uses those same three knobs on paper. They are not one knob.
Complexity is how many pieces the brain and the feet must run at once: direction, arms, travel, rhythm, equipment, a turn. Regress complexity by removing arms, removing travel, slowing the teach, or holding the base. Progress complexity by adding one piece. A grapevine is more complex than a step-touch even at the same heart rate.
Impact is how the body meets the floor (or the bike, or the water): march, step-touch, jog, jump, rebound. Aqua has buoyancy; cycle has essentially no foot-ground impact. Impact is a joint and pelvic-floor and landing-skill decision, not a moral one. Regress impact before you “motivate” someone into a jump they cannot land.
Load is external resistance, lever length, range of motion, and sometimes tempo (a slow eccentric is more load-time even with the same bell — Chapter 8). Bodyweight → band → light bell → heavier bell is a load ladder. Arms overhead in a crunch lengthens the lever. Kneeling shortens the body lever in a push-up.
Fitness level is the person those knobs are for. A trained athlete can still need an impact regression the day after a long run. A beginner can still take a load progression on a simple pattern they own. Do not glue “beginner” to “must be easy on every knob.”

Change one planned variable unless you have a specific reason to change two, and never as the default for mixed drop-in. SAID still applies (Chapter 5): if you wanted a harder squat, add load or slow the eccentric. Adding a jump-turn makes it a different skill with a different risk.
Other legal knobs that still keep purpose:
- Base of support — wide stance to narrow to tandem to single-leg (Chapter 9's circus rule still holds: no eyes-closed dome as the group default).
- Assistance — wall, barre, kneeling, hands on thighs.
- Surface — floor before an unstable toy.

Same Purpose, Different Bodies
Worked menus you can steal as planning logic, not as an unpublished official catalog:
Jumping jack (cardio). Complexity regression: feet only, arms on hips. Impact regression: step-touch jack. Load progression: hold light bells only if the landing still looks like a landing — otherwise you progressed the wrong knob. Purpose test: still frontal-plane cardio, still a jack family.
Push-up (upper-body strength-endurance). Wall → incline (hands on a bench you inspected) → knees → toes. That is mostly load via body angle. Adding a clap is an impact and complexity progression, not the next step for a mixed lunch class. Purpose test: still a horizontal press.
Squat (lower-body strength-endurance). Sit-to-stand → bodyweight squat to a depth they control → goblet. Jump squat is an impact change. A 180 jump squat is impact plus complexity. Do not use it as the first “harder” for someone who just found depth.
Hinge / swing. Bodyweight hip hinge or glute bridge → dumbbell Romanian deadlift → kettlebell swing. The swing adds timing and impact-ish snap. If inventory is short, the hinge twin stays on the paper (10.3). Purpose test: still posterior-chain hip hinge, not a squat in costume.
Plank. Incline plank or kneeling plank → full plank → longer lever (further from the hands) or a shoulder tap. A bouncing plank jack is impact plus complexity. Purpose test: still trunk endurance, still a spine they can keep organized.
Special-population planning without repeating Chapter 6's lecture:
- Older adults often need a longer raise, an impact menu, and a balance menu that still has a handhold. That is Task G, not a separate medical class unless the description said so.
- Pre- and postnatal participants need options, not your diagnosis. Avoid unpublished protocol theater from the stage; offer stance, impact, and supine-time choices you already wrote, and refer clearance questions.
- Orthopedic stories you can see (a knee brace, a person who will not take a jump) get the impact or range option without an interview over the microphone.
Traps That Look Inclusive
- “Just do what you can” with no named option. That is abandonment wearing kindness.
- Progressing three knobs at once and calling it SAID.
- A regression that abandons the objective (stretch instead of a squat; bike aisle lunges instead of a climb).
- Making the progression the default so the regression feels like a public demotion. Demo the default mixed-level version. Flash the harder option. Repeat that the home version is the class.
- Modifications only for “injured people.” Skill, fatigue, heat, and preference are legal reasons to take an option. You still do not diagnose.
- Waiting until Domain 3 to think about options. Live coaching cannot retrieve a menu you never wrote.
- One-on-one corrective exercise as the group plan. You are not writing 24 personal-training programs. You are writing three versions of the featured pattern.
Put the menu on the top of each block next to the objective. If you cannot name the easier version in one breath, you do not have a mixed-level plan. You have a demonstration.
