Twenty-four people walk into a strength-endurance hour. The cart holds eight kettlebells. The plan says two-hand swings for everyone, no pairing, no bodyweight hinge, no lighter twin. People grab bells they cannot park at the hip. Two bells collide in the downswing. Independent OpenExamPrep CGFI teaching calls that a Task C miss: you did not identify appropriate equipment for this description, this room, and these bodies. You identified a social-media move and hoped the closet would cooperate.

Task C Is a Filter, Not a Shopping List

The 2020 Job Analysis Task C asks you to identify appropriate equipment based on class description and objectives, with an understanding of safe and varied uses for common tools, environmental constraints, and various potential fitness levels. The matching knowledge statement (k26) adds space requirements and the same fitness-level caution.

Read the description first. A restorative flexibility hour does not need slam balls because they are in the closet. An indoor-cycle hour needs bikes that can be set up, not a row of kettlebells in the aisle. A dance-cardio hour may need no tools, and that can be the correct Task C answer.

Then read the room. Ceiling height kills overhead slams. Pillars kill traveling diagonals. A wet wood floor kills gliding discs. Outdoor gravel kills unstable toys. Virtual living rooms (later chapters) kill “everyone grab the 20-kilogram bell from the rack.”

Then read who might show up. First-timers, regulars, people who will not jump, people who want more load. The tool has to have a menu, not a single personality.

Chapter 8 already treated sharing as a strength-programming variable (staggered sets, load menu, bodyweight twin). This section is the selection layer: which objects come off the cart, how much space they eat, and what you will do when the count is ugly. Domain 3 will ask you to keep flow when equipment fails in the hour (insufficient tools, a snapped band). The reason that live task is survivable is the substitute you wrote here.

Common Tools: Safe Use, Space, Varied Use

Independent teaching uses industry safety practice, not an unpublished official AFAA square-footage statute. Heuristic: people need room for the largest range of motion you will ask, plus a buffer so a miss does not become a hit. Traveling blocks need lanes. Swings and slams need a drop zone nobody is standing in. Overhead work needs ceiling. Those are planning questions you can see when you walk the room.

Dumbbells and kettlebells. Varied use: goblet squat, hinge, carry, press, row. Safe use: choose a load the person can park and control, not the last heavy bell as a prize. Collars on bars if you use plates. Do not swing through a neighbor's lane. Space: more than a static curl needs — a swing wants a cone of floor in front and back. Short-inventory twin: slower goblet or bodyweight hinge, or share with staggered sets.

Tubes and bands. Varied use: press, row, squat bias, lateral walk. Safe use: inspect for nicks; do not stretch toward the face; do not stretch a tube past a manufacturer's honest length; anchor only on something that will not become a projectile. Space: the stretched length plus the person behind it. Twin: bodyweight or a dumbbell pattern.

Steps and platforms. Varied use: tap-up cardio, step-up strength, a riser as a regression bench for incline push-ups. Safe use: height the person can control; stacks that do not rock; no jumping onto a wobbly tower in a mixed drop-in. Space: around the step, not only on it — a repeater that hops off needs a landing pad. Twin: floor tap-up or a bodyweight squat if steps are short.

Mats. Varied use: floor strength, flexibility, a visual “this is your spot.” Safe use: they are trip hazards when half-rolled; leave aisles. Twin: the floor, if it is clean and acceptable for the work.

Indoor bikes. The bike is the equipment. Setup (saddle, bars, cleats or cages) is a safety use, not a luxury. Varied use is cadence and gear, seated and standing (Chapter 8), not a sudden aisle plyometric. Twin if a bike is down: you do not invent a jump-lunge class in the doorway — you follow the club's spare-bike or format rule, or you regress that rider to an easy spin on a working bike if one exists. Do not pretend a hallway lunge is indoor cycle.

Gliding discs. Varied use: standing abduction, reverse lunge slide, core on the floor. Safe use: only on a surface that actually glides and is dry. Twin: a towel on a suitable floor, or delete the slide and keep the pattern without travel.

Medicine balls. Varied use: rotational throw against a wall that is rated for it, slam if the ceiling and floor allow, partner pass with spacing. Safe use: no slams into a low ceiling, no partner passes in a packed dance grid. Twin: isometric rotational press or a standing wood-chop with a band.

Unstable surfaces (dome, inflated disc). Varied use: some balance progressions for people who already own the floor version. Safe use: not the default for mixed drop-in jumps or loaded presses. Twin: the floor. Chapter 9 already named the circus.

Body bars / light barbells. Varied use: squat, hinge, press. Safe use: swinging radius, racking, no behind-the-neck surprise for a mixed room. Twin: dumbbell or bodyweight.

Suspension trainers. Varied use: row, squat, push. Safe use: rated anchors, straps that will not whip a neighbor, spacing so two people are not sharing one unit unless the design says so. Twin: a band row or a bodyweight squat.

Shared Equipment and Short Inventory

Count before class, not during the first chorus.

  1. Expected headcount (and the usual overfill for this slot).
  2. Tools on the cart after inspection.
  3. Share rule: one-per-person, pairs, stations, or a bodyweight default.
  4. Named twin on the plan and in the introduction so nobody has to invent dignity mid-set.

If 24 people and 8 bells is the math, legal designs include:

  • Stagger: 8 work, 8 rest and watch, rotate, and a third group on a bodyweight twin at the same time if space allows.
  • Stations: bell station, band station, bodyweight station, timed rotation, walkways marked.
  • Everyone on the twin, bells as a progression option for a subset — only if that matches the objective and does not create a status fight.

Illegal designs:

  • The 8 bells go to the fittest 8; everyone else watches.
  • “Figure it out” sharing with no rest structure.
  • Making the swing the only legal move.

Fitness level still governs who touches the remaining heavy bell. Leftover inventory is not a character prize. The person who can control the 12 uses the 12. The person who wanted the 28 and cannot park it does not get it because it was lonely on the cart.

Substitutions you can write in one line:

  • No enough kettlebells → hip hinge with a dumbbell, slow goblet, or glute bridge; keep posterior-chain purpose.
  • Not enough steps → floor tap-up, march, or squat; keep the cardio or strength purpose you named.
  • Not enough bands, or a snap → bodyweight row on a towel (if the floor is safe) or a dumbbell row if those exist; stop the nicked band.
  • Promised gliders, wet floor → lateral step-touch or standing abduction, no slide.
  • Promised slams, low ceiling → isometric or band chop.

That list is how Task C talks to later unexpected-equipment items. You are not asked in this chapter to narrate the whole emergency script. You are asked to not be surprised by arithmetic.

Environment, Inspection, and the Intro

Walk the room as part of selection:

  • Flooring: wood, rubber, wet, outdoor uneven, pool deck.
  • Fixed objects: pillars, mirrors, bikes bolted in a grid.
  • Exits and walkways: equipment cannot block the way out (professionalism and risk chapters will press this; design already owns it).
  • HVAC and heat: heavy tools plus a closed cycle room is a different class than the same tools in a cold studio — you may regress density, not ignore heat (Chapter 6).
  • Virtual / small spaces: in-place tools, short ROM, no traveling diagonals you cannot see.

Inspect. Frayed tubes, cracked handles, loose rivets, rocking risers, bikes with failed pedals, slick discs, balls that do not bounce true. Damaged equipment is out. Coaching people to “be careful” with a nicked band is not a safe varied use.

Introduction (Chapter 12 will teach the live script) should already know the equipment sentence because Task C wrote it: what to grab, where it lives, the share rule, and that a twin exists. If you cannot say that sentence in the first minute, the cart was a hope.

Traps:

  1. Choosing a tool because it is trendy, not because it serves the description.
  2. One-per-person choreography with a 1:3 inventory ratio.
  3. Unstable toys as the mixed-level default.
  4. Glide or plyo on a wet or crowded surface.
  5. Handing leftover heavy bells to whoever is fastest.
  6. Inventing a different format when a tool is short (cycle class becomes hallway burpees) instead of a twin that keeps the objective.
  7. Treating inspection as optional because class starts in ninety seconds.

Pick the object that can deliver the hour you named, in the space you actually have, for the bodies who actually arrive, with a twin if the closet lies. That is equipment selection. Everything else is a prop closet with an audience.
