Anatomical Position Is the Map, Not a Pose You Hold
Anatomical position is the reference: standing upright, facing forward, arms at the sides, palms facing forward (forearms supinated), feet together or slightly apart. Every plane, axis, and joint-action name is defined from this map even when your class is seated on a bike, supine on a mat, or lunging toward the windows.
Right and left are the participant's right and left. When you face the room, your right is their left — demo at an angle or cue "your right."
The Three Cardinal Planes
The body can be sliced by three cardinal planes. Motion in a plane is motion along that slice.
Sagittal plane divides left from right. Movement is forward and backward: flexion and extension, plus ankle dorsiflexion and plantarflexion. Group pictures: squat, reverse lunge, biceps curl, most of an indoor-cycle pedal stroke, cat-cow.
Frontal plane (also called the coronal plane) divides front from back. Movement is side to side: abduction and adduction, spinal lateral flexion, scapular elevation and depression, foot inversion and eversion. Group pictures: jumping jack, lateral lunge, grapevine, side-plank hip lift, lateral raise.
Transverse plane (horizontal) divides upper from lower. Rotation around a long vertical axis: internal and external rotation, horizontal abduction and adduction, spinal rotation, forearm pronation and supination. Group pictures: wood chop, bicycle rotation, chest-height band row, rear-delt fly.
Almost every interesting class move is multiplanar. You still name a dominant plane so you can coach it. If you only say "abs," you have not named the planes, and you will not notice when rotation disappears and a bicycle becomes a frantic sagittal yank.
Four Signature Moves, Named Honestly
Squat — sagittal-dominant. Hips and knees flex on the descent and extend on the ascent. Ankles dorsiflex as the knees travel forward within the range the person owns. The thigh and trunk swing around a mediolateral axis. A wide sumo with a ribcage twist adds frontal and transverse components — a different exercise, not a "better squat." A box squat or removing a jump still lives in the sagittal plane; you changed range or impact.
Jumping jack — frontal-dominant. Hips and shoulders abduct as the limbs travel away from the midline and adduct as they return. A step-touch jack is still frontal-plane work if the limbs travel out and in; you removed impact, not the plane. Hopping in place with arms pumping forward converts it into a sagittal march — abductors and adductors lose the job. Cue "out and in," not only "up and down."
Wood chop — transverse-dominant diagonal. A high-to-low chop rotates the trunk while the arms travel on a diagonal that also has sagittal flexion and a frontal side-bend flavor. Teach controlled thoracic rotation, not a lumbar whip. Half-kneeling or a shorter arc reduces how much the pelvis must spin. If the shoulders stay square and only the elbows bend, the chop died and became a sagittal press-down.
Bicycle crunch — sagittal plus transverse. The trunk flexes while opposite elbow and knee approximate with rotation. Hips and knees also flex and extend. The trap is yanking the neck and flinging the legs so fast that rotation vanishes — sagittal hip-flexor yanking that still looks like a bicycle on the playlist. Slow the tempo or offer a dead-bug with a small opposite-shoulder lift so both planes stay honest.
Axes: The Axle the Plane Spins Around
A plane of motion is perpendicular to its axis. You may never say "mediolateral axis" into a sweaty microphone. Items will still pair plane, axis, and action.
Think of the axis as the pin you would drop through the joint so the segment can swing — a door hinge.

The squat swings around a pin through both hips from side to side. The jumping jack swings around a pin front to back through hip and shoulder. The wood chop swings around a pin from the crown of the head toward the floor.
Joint-Action Table You Can Cue Out Loud
Stop saying only "up" and "down." Name the joint and the action. Body alignment checkpoints (ribs stacked over pelvis, knees over mid-foot) describe segment position; they do not replace the action name.

Scapular upward rotation still has to travel with an overhead arm, or the neck finishes the range.
Mixing Planes Is Programming, Not Decoration
A 45-minute sagittal-only block — squat, lunge, crunch, seated cycle — underserves frontal abductors and adductors and transverse rotators. Add a lateral lunge, side plank, chop, or thoracic opener because the movement map is incomplete, not because of unpublished official "plane minutes." Cycle cranks stay sagittal-dominant; jacks and lateral bounds add frontal; chops add transverse.
Traps that show up on items
Calling a wood chop "just a crunch" misses rotation. Cueing jacks as "cardio squats" names the wrong plane. Speeding a bicycle until rotation disappears, or asking the lumbar spine to be the primary rotator under fatigue, are the expensive versions. Changing impact is not the same as changing the plane.
How regressions keep or drop a plane
- Sagittal squat too much: reduce depth, add a box, remove the jump. Still sagittal.
- Frontal jack too much impact: step-touch out and in. Still frontal.
- Transverse chop too much rotation: shorten the arc, go half-kneeling, slow the tempo. Still transverse, less momentum.
- Bicycle too much: dead-bug or heel tap without the twist. That drops the transverse component on purpose — say so, so the person knows what they traded.
Name the plane, name the joint action, then change one variable.
