Can You Take the ADF YOU Session Exam?

Check if you meet the basic eligibility requirements

Age
Generally at least 17 years old to enlist, with parental or guardian consent required for applicants under 18.
Education
Minimum education varies by role; many entry roles require completion of Year 10, while officer and technical roles require higher qualifications.
Experience
No prior experience is required for general entry. The JOA assesses natural reasoning ability rather than knowledge from study.
Background Check
Character, security, medical, and psychological checks are conducted later in the recruitment process, not as part of the JOA.
Additional Requirements
  • Australian citizenship is required for most roles; some roles accept permanent residents and certain non-citizens.
  • Meet ADF health, fitness, and medical standards at the Assessment Session.
  • Pass the Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) at a later stage of recruitment.
  • Attend a virtual YOU (Your Opportunities Unlimited) Session and Defence interview.
