How You Access the JOA

The Job Opportunities Assessment (JOA) is the aptitude step early in the Australian Defence Force recruitment pathway. Once your application has started, Defence Force Recruiting provides access to the assessment online via a unique link sent by email. That link is personal to you. Treat it like a scheduled appointment: open it only when you intend to complete the full session, not when you are merely curious or half-ready.

Official guidance stresses that you should not access the unique link until you are ready to complete the JOA in full. You should have roughly thirty minutes free—enough uninterrupted time for both the short practice block and the scored assessment window. Starting when you only have ten minutes before a meeting, when your shared computer is about to be needed by someone else, or when your connection is already dropping packets is a common and avoidable self-inflicted failure mode.

Online delivery vs Careers Centre

Most candidates complete the JOA online from home, school, a library, or another quiet location with a suitable computer. If you do not have a suitable device, you are not locked out of the process. Official guidance allows you to complete the JOA at the nearest ADF Careers Centre. To arrange that option, call 13 19 01. Centres exist so candidates without reliable hardware or a stable private internet setup can still sit the assessment under appropriate conditions.

Use the Careers Centre route when:

• You only have a phone or tablet and no laptop or desktop access
• Your home internet is unreliable or heavily shared
• You cannot secure a quiet block of uninterrupted time at home
• Accessibility or support needs make a supervised centre environment preferable

Do not invent a third option (for example, attempting the assessment on a borrowed phone “just this once”). Device rules exist because the online interface is designed for a full browser environment on a computer, not for mobile layouts or touch-only sessions.

Device Requirements

Official requirements for the online JOA are explicit. Meeting them is part of protecting your attempt, not optional polish.

Supported and unsupported devices

Laptop or desktop only. The JOA online pathway is built for a computer screen, full keyboard input where needed, and a standard browser window. Phones and iPads are not supported. Even if a link “opens” on a phone, you should not rely on that experience: layout, timing behaviour, input methods, and session stability may fail in ways that cost you questions or end the session incorrectly.

Stable internet. You need a connection that will hold for the entire practice-plus-assessment period. Prefer wired Ethernet or a strong, known Wi-Fi network over public café Wi-Fi that drops, captive-portal logins that re-prompt mid-session, or mobile hotspots that throttle mid-test. If your connection is flaky, switch location or use a Careers Centre rather than gambling an attempt.

Browser checklist

Use one of the officially listed browsers:

1. Google Chrome
2. Microsoft Edge
3. Mozilla Firefox
4. Apple Safari

Before you open the unique link:

• Update the browser to a current stable version if you are far behind (old browsers are more likely to mis-handle modern assessment platforms)
• Close unnecessary tabs so CPU and memory are free for the assessment page
• Disable or temporarily allow pop-ups for the assessment domain—pop-up blockers must be off for the session
• Disable aggressive ad blockers or privacy extensions only if they are known to block assessment scripts (test your environment carefully before the real attempt)
• Confirm you can type normally and that keyboard layout is correct (especially if you switch languages frequently)

Pop-up blockers and why they matter

Assessment platforms often open practice items, timers, instructions, or result-related windows through mechanisms that look like pop-ups to the browser. If a blocker silently stops those windows, you may see a blank page, a stuck “loading” state, or missing navigation controls. Official guidance is unambiguous: turn pop-up blockers off for the JOA session. Do this before you click the unique link, not after the assessment has already started and something fails.

Practical approaches:

• In Chrome/Edge: site settings → Pop-ups and redirects → Allow (or turn the extension off for the session)
• In Firefox: Preferences → Privacy & Security → Permissions → Block pop-up windows (disable for the session)
• In Safari: Settings → Websites → Pop-up Windows → Allow for the assessment site

If you use corporate or school-managed devices, you may not control these settings. In that case, use a personal computer you control or book an ADF Careers Centre session via 13 19 01.

Session Behaviour Rules

Do not click outside the browser

Once the assessment has begun, do not click outside the browser. Official guidance warns that doing so may cause errors. That includes:

• Switching to another application (chat, music, notes, calculator apps)
• Clicking the desktop or dock/taskbar
• Opening a second browser window or tab and clicking into it
• Responding to OS notifications that steal focus

Treat the assessment window as a sealed workspace. Silence notifications beforehand. Put your phone out of reach so you are not tempted to glance and then click away. Full-screen or maximised browser mode can help you stay inside the window, but maximising is not a substitute for discipline—trackpads and multi-monitor setups make accidental focus loss easy.

Budget about thirty free minutes

You need roughly thirty minutes free covering both the practice portion and the assessment window. The practice block exists so you can see item styles and interface behaviour before the scored work. If you open the link when you only have “just enough time for the test itself,” you may rush practice, skip orientation, or feel forced to start the scored portion already stressed. Protect a full quiet block: door closed, household informed, bathroom break already taken, water available, and no competing appointments for that half hour.

Environment setup that protects performance

Logistics are not only hardware. Build a mini checklist the day before and again thirty minutes before opening the link:

• Quiet room; headphones only if they help block noise (not for audio content—the JOA is not an audio listening exam)
• Desk height and seating that you can maintain for thirty focused minutes
• Screen brightness comfortable; reduce glare
• Charger plugged in (do not sit an aptitude test on 8% battery)
• Browser ready, pop-ups allowed, only assessment tab planned
• Unique email link located (search inbox/spam for the official recruiting message) but not yet clicked until the block starts
• Support number noted: 13 19 01 (weekdays 8:00am–9:30pm, Saturdays 8:00am–7:00pm AEST) if you need help arranging a Careers Centre or have process questions before you start

What “ready to complete in full” really means

Readiness is more than free time on a calendar. Before you open the unique link, confirm all of the following:

1. Device class is correct — laptop or desktop, not phone/iPad
2. Browser is approved — Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari
3. Pop-ups are allowed for the session
4. Internet is stable for ~30 minutes
5. You will not multi-task or click outside the browser
6. You are prepared to finish practice and assessment without pausing for errands
7. If any item fails, you have a plan: fix the issue first, or call 13 19 01 about a Careers Centre booking—do not burn an attempt on a broken setup

Common setup mistakes

Candidates lose time or risk session errors when they:

• Open the unique link on a phone “to see what it looks like”
• Start on a public computer with locked-down pop-up settings
• Run the assessment while downloading large files or streaming video on the same connection
• Share the computer mid-session with a family member who clicks another window
• Rely on an almost-dead laptop battery without a charger
• Ignore the thirty-minute free-time guidance and start between classes with only fifteen minutes available

None of these mistakes are about aptitude. They are logistics failures. The JOA measures reasoning under time; it does not reward improvising on unsupported devices.

If something goes wrong before you start

If your laptop dies, your only browser is blocked by workplace policy, or you discover you only have a tablet, stop before opening the link. Resolving access before you click the unique link is far safer than fighting technical failures after the session has begun.
