About the ADF YOU Session Exam
The ADF YOU Session aptitude test, delivered as the Job Opportunities Assessment (JOA), is the online aptitude assessment every Australian Defence Force applicant completes early in recruitment. It is made up of two timed, computer-based multiple-choice tests: a General Ability Test (75 questions in 30 minutes covering verbal, numerical, and abstract reasoning) and a Mathematical Ability Test (around 27 questions in 20 minutes covering arithmetic through to geometry and trigonometry). No calculator is permitted, and at roughly 24 seconds per General Ability question the main challenge is speed. There is no published pass mark; instead, your results form a Job Opportunities Report that matches you to the ADF roles you are best suited for, which is then discussed at a virtual YOU (Your Opportunities Unlimited) Session.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the ADF YOU Session aptitude test?
It is the aptitude assessment the Australian Defence Force uses early in recruitment, now delivered as the Job Opportunities Assessment (JOA). It consists of two timed multiple-choice tests — General Ability and Mathematical Ability — that measure reasoning ability and help match you to suitable ADF roles.
How many questions and how long is the test?
The General Ability Test has 75 questions in 30 minutes (about 24 seconds each) and the Mathematical Ability Test has around 27 questions in 20 minutes. That is roughly 100 questions in about 50 minutes of testing time.
Is there a pass mark for the JOA?
The ADF does not publish a pass mark and does not share your individual score. Your results form a Job Opportunities Report that matches you to roles — the higher you score, the more ADF job options become available to you.
Can I use a calculator?
No. Calculators and electronic devices are not permitted. You must rely on mental arithmetic, estimation, and scratch paper, which is why practising fast mental calculation is key preparation.
How much does the assessment cost?
The JOA is free. It is part of the standard ADF application process; there is no exam fee and no retake fee, though a weak result generally means waiting around six months before re-sitting.
What is the difference between the JOA and the YOU Session?
The JOA is the online aptitude test, while the YOU (Your Opportunities Unlimited) Session is a virtual interview with a Careers Coach that discusses your JOA results and the roles you may apply for. People often refer to the aptitude tests as the 'YOU Session' aptitude test.
Can I take the JOA at home?
Yes. The JOA is usually completed online via a unique emailed link on a laptop or desktop. If you complete it online, you may be asked to complete a similar supervised assessment at an ADF Careers Centre to verify your results.
What happens after I complete the JOA?
You receive a personalised Job Opportunities Report and are contacted to arrange a meeting with a recruiter. The process then continues with the YOU Session, a Defence interview, medical and psychological assessments, and a Physical Fitness Assessment.
