What blood alcohol limit applies to heavy vehicle drivers in WA?
Unlike some other Australian states, WA does not impose a blanket zero BAC on all heavy vehicle drivers. The standard 0.05 BAC limit applies to most fully licensed MR, HR and HC drivers. A zero BAC applies only in specific situations: when the vehicle's gross combination mass (GCM) exceeds 22.5 tonnes, while carrying dangerous goods, for buses equipped to carry more than 12 adults while carrying passengers, and for taxis or small charter vehicles while carrying passengers for hire or reward. Learner and provisional drivers must always maintain a zero BAC.
Do WA heavy vehicle drivers need to keep a National Driver Work Diary?
Only in specific circumstances. HR licence holders (and higher) must carry and complete a National Driver Work Diary if they drive a vehicle or combination weighing more than 12 tonnes, or a bus fitted to carry more than 12 adults including the driver, AND they are driving outside Western Australia and the Northern Territory. For trips within WA, fatigue for commercial vehicle drivers is instead regulated by WorkSafe WA under the Work Health and Safety (General) Regulations 2022.
What is the maximum speed limit for heavy vehicles in WA?
A vehicle with a gross vehicle mass (including any trailer and load) exceeding 12 tonnes has a maximum speed limit of 100 km/h, even where a higher limit is posted for other traffic. In built-up areas, vehicles over 4.5 tonnes have a default 50 km/h limit unless a different limit is signposted. HR learner permit holders also cannot exceed 100 km/h under any circumstances.
