About the ICC E1 Exam
The ICC Residential Electrical Inspector (E1) exam is administered by the International Code Council and certifies individuals to inspect electrical systems in one- and two-family dwellings, townhouses up to three stories, and accessory structures for compliance with the International Residential Code (IRC). The open-book exam tests knowledge of services, branch circuits, feeders, wiring methods, GFCI/AFCI protection, grounding/bonding, and swimming pool wiring as covered in IRC Part VIII (Chapters 34-43). How do the ICC E1 vocabulary games work?
There are 4 games built on 20 ICC E1 terms. In Guess the Term, a clue describes one term and you have six tries to spell it, with green, yellow and gray letters showing how close you are. In Term Match, six terms appear as colored tiles; swap neighbors to line up three or more of the same term, and each match shows what the term means. In Term Pairs, twelve face-down cards hide six pairs of terms; flip two at a time to find each pair, and every pair you find shows what the term means. In Term Search, five terms hide in a grid of letters, reading across, down or diagonally; drag across a term to circle it, and each term you find shows what it means.
Where do the ICC E1 terms come from?
OpenExamPrep researched each term from the ICC (Pearson VUE / PRONTO) content outline and primary sources, listed under Sources on this page. The game is independent study material, not an official exam resource.
What score do I need to pass the ICC E1 exam?
The ICC E1 exam requires a scaled score of 75 to pass, which corresponds to approximately 75% of questions answered correctly — about 45 out of 60 questions. If you pass, you see 'PASS' on your results — no numerical score is shown for passing candidates. If you fail, you receive a diagnostic report showing your performance by content area so you know which domains to restudy. ICC uses scaled scoring set by the ICC Exam Development Committee to normalize difficulty across exam forms.
Is the ICC E1 exam open-book?
Yes, the ICC E1 exam is open-book. For the 2024 code year the approved references are the 2024 International Residential Code (IRC) plus either Ugly's Electrical References or the 2023 NFPA National Electrical Code (the 2021 form pairs the 2021 IRC with Ugly's or the 2020 NEC). Bound, copyrighted books are allowed, but study guides and practice questions are not. With 2 minutes per question on average, you must be able to find IRC Part VIII sections quickly.
