Frequently Asked Questions
What score do I need to pass the ICC E1 exam?
The ICC E1 exam uses a scaled score, and you need a scaled score of 75 to pass — roughly equivalent to answering 75% of questions correctly, or about 45 of 60 questions. ICC does not publish raw pass/fail cut counts or first-time pass rates for this exam; a pass shows simply as 'PASS,' while a fail comes with a diagnostic breakdown by content area.
What code edition does the ICC E1 exam use?
The current ICC E1 exam is based on the 2024 International Residential Code (IRC), Part VIII - Electrical, Chapters 34-43. The 2024 IRC's electrical chapters are themselves adapted from the 2023 National Electrical Code (NFPA 70-2023), reformatted specifically for one- and two-family dwellings. You do not need a separate NEC book for the exam — the IRC is the complete reference.
What is the ICC E1 exam retake policy?
ICC requires a 10-day wait between exam attempts. You may attempt the exam up to six times within a six-month period; once you exhaust all six attempts, you must wait six months from your very first attempt before registering again. There is no cap on lifetime attempts, but you pay the full exam fee each time.
Is the ICC E1 exam open-book?
Yes. You may bring the 2024 IRC as your reference, and you're permitted to tab and highlight it, but loose inserts and sticky notes are not allowed. With only 2 minutes per question on average, knowing exactly where things live in Part VIII matters as much as knowing the rules themselves.
What is the hardest section of the ICC E1 exam?
Branch Circuit and Feeder Requirements (28%) and Wiring Methods and Power Distribution (21%) together make up nearly half the exam and involve the most table lookups — load calculations, box fill, and conductor/overcurrent sizing all require finding exact values quickly under time pressure.
