About the ICC P2 Exam

The ICC Commercial Plumbing Inspector (P2) exam is administered by the International Code Council and certifies individuals to inspect plumbing installations in commercial, industrial, institutional, and multi-family buildings. ICC offers the open-book exam on the 2021 and 2024 code years; the 2024 version is based on the 2024 International Plumbing Code (IPC), with select questions drawn from the 2024 International Fuel Gas Code (IFGC) and ICC A117.1-2017 Accessibility Standard. It covers general regulations, fixtures and fittings, water heaters, water supply and distribution, sanitary drainage, vents, traps and interceptors, storm drainage, and medical gas systems. P2 is one of four exams required for the C5 Commercial Combination Inspector credential and is recognized in all 50 states.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the ICC P2 vocabulary game free?

Yes. The game is free to play with no sign-up. Signing in adds AI explanations for any term.

How do the ICC P2 vocabulary games work?

There are 4 games built on 20 ICC P2 terms. In Guess the Term, a clue describes one term and you have six tries to spell it, with green, yellow and gray letters showing how close you are. In Term Match, six terms appear as colored tiles; swap neighbors to line up three or more of the same term, and each match shows what the term means. In Term Pairs, twelve face-down cards hide six pairs of terms; flip two at a time to find each pair, and every pair you find shows what the term means. In Term Search, five terms hide in a grid of letters, reading across, down or diagonally; drag across a term to circle it, and each term you find shows what it means.

Where do the ICC P2 terms come from?

OpenExamPrep researched each term from the ICC (Pearson VUE / PRONTO) content outline and primary sources, listed under Sources on this page. The game is independent study material, not an official exam resource.

What score do I need to pass the ICC P2 exam?

The ICC P2 exam requires a scaled score of 75 to pass, which corresponds to approximately 75% of questions answered correctly (about 45 out of 60 questions). If you pass, you see 'PASS' on your results — no numerical score is shown for passing candidates. If you fail, you receive a diagnostic report showing your performance by content area. The scaled score accounts for small differences in difficulty between exam forms so every candidate is judged against the same standard.

Is the ICC P2 exam open-book?

Yes, the ICC P2 exam is open-book. You are allowed to bring the 2024 International Plumbing Code (IPC), the 2024 International Fuel Gas Code (IFGC), and the ICC A117.1-2017 Accessibility Standard. You can tab, highlight, and annotate these books. However, with only 2.5 minutes per question, you need fluency in the IPC layout — especially the fixture tables in Chapter 4, DWV sizing tables in Chapter 7, and vent sizing tables in Chapter 9. Most successful candidates tab at least 50 critical sections before the exam.
