Frequently Asked Questions
What is the ITIL 4 Foundation passing score and format?
ITIL 4 Foundation is a 40-question, multiple-choice, closed-book exam with a 60-minute time limit (75 minutes for candidates not sitting in their native language). You must answer 26 of 40 questions correctly to reach the 65% pass mark. There is no negative marking, so you should answer every question.
Are there prerequisites for ITIL 4 Foundation?
No. ITIL 4 Foundation has no formal prerequisites and is the entry point to the ITIL 4 certification scheme. Anyone can take it without prior ITSM experience or a required training course, although accredited training and the official eBook are widely used. Foundation is required before higher ITIL 4 modules such as Specialist and Strategist.
How many guiding principles, dimensions, and practices are in ITIL 4?
ITIL 4 defines 7 guiding principles, 4 dimensions of service management, 6 value chain activities, and 34 management practices grouped into general management (14), service management (17), and technical management (3). The Foundation exam tests all of these, but only a subset of practices are examined in detail.
What is the difference between ITIL v3 and ITIL 4?
ITIL 4 replaces the v3 service lifecycle with the Service Value System and replaces processes with a flexible Service Value Chain plus 34 practices. The 4 Ps became the 4 dimensions, and v3's principles were consolidated into 7 guiding principles. ITIL 4 also embeds value co-creation and modern ways of working such as Agile, Lean, and DevOps.
How long is the ITIL 4 Foundation certificate valid?
Under current PeopleCert policy, certifications carry a defined validity period (typically renewed every three years through continuing professional development or by taking a higher module). Foundation knowledge is widely treated as evergreen, but candidates should confirm the current renewal requirement on the PeopleCert website before relying on lifetime validity.
What topics carry the most weight on the exam?
The largest blocks are the ITIL practices (purpose, key terms, and several practices in detail) and the guiding principles. Service management key concepts, the four dimensions, the Service Value System, and the service value chain round out the syllabus. Expect several questions on incident, problem, change enablement, service request, service desk, and service level management practices.
