ITIL (Version 5) After Foundation 2026: Which Module to Take Next

Your Next ITIL Exam Is Decided by Designation, Not by Interest

Verified July 25, 2026 against the live PeopleCert ITIL certification catalog, the individual Version 5 module product pages, and the PeopleCert ITIL FAQ.

Once you hold ITIL Foundation (Version 5), there is no ranked "level 2." PeopleCert's scheme has three designations, and each one names the exact modules you must pass. Pick the designation first; the module list follows automatically.

Two rules do most of the work. First, ITIL Transformation (Version 5) sits in every designation — the PeopleCert ITIL FAQ states it "only needs to be completed once, and the achievement counts across all designations." Second, PeopleCert lists accredited training or official eLearning as a prerequisite for every post-Foundation module, and warns that "Exam results will not be released without proof of completion." Post-Foundation ITIL is not a self-study path, no matter how much practice you do.

What You Can Actually Buy Today

Certification-path articles published in March and April 2026 describe a scheme that was still rolling out. This is the live catalog as of July 25, 2026.

Three practical consequences follow. If you need official eLearning rather than a live course, Strategy and Transformation cannot be self-served yet — you must book an Accredited Training Organization. If you want the Managing Professional Transition route, you cannot buy it from the website; you go through a partner. And if a provider's roadmap tells you to plan an AI Governance certification into this year, treat that as forecast, not availability.

Every Version 5 Upper Module Is the Same Exam — and It Is Nothing Like Foundation

Foundation trains a habit that the upper modules immediately break. Each of the four Version 5 upper modules published its own product page, and they are identical in format:

Same question count, 50% more time, open book, and a higher bar. That combination tells you what changes about preparation:

• Open book does not mean easy. With 135 seconds per question and 28 marks needed, you cannot look anything up that you have not already indexed. Build a navigation map of the official book before exam day, not a reading list.
• The 70% pass mark removes your margin. At Foundation you can lose 14 of 40 marks. Here you can lose 12. One shaky topic area is enough to fail.
• The extra 30 minutes exists because the questions are longer. Expect applied, scenario-framed items rather than the definition recall that dominates Foundation's Bloom Level 1 content.

The Prerequisite Rule, and Who It Blocks

Every Version 5 upper module page states the same prerequisite verbatim:

Any ITIL 4 certification or ITIL Foundation (Version 5) or ITIL Foundation Bridge (Version 5)

Read that carefully, because it settles two questions people ask constantly:

• ITIL 4 Foundation holders are already eligible. Any ITIL 4 certification satisfies the prerequisite. You do not need the Bridge to start Product, Service, Experience, Strategy, or Transformation. The Bridge only gets you the Version 5 Foundation badge.
• ITIL v3 does not carry over. The PeopleCert ITIL FAQ is explicit: "The ITIL v3 Foundation certification is not accepted as a prerequisite for ITIL (Version 5) higher-level certifications," and "ITIL v3 Intermediate certifications (such as Service Strategy) are not accepted as prerequisites for ITIL (Version 5) upper-level certifications." If ITIL v3 is all you hold, your next exam is Foundation (Version 5) — not a specialization.

One inconsistency is worth knowing before you buy. The ITIL 4 Specialist practice modules still show the older prerequisite wording, "ITIL Foundation (any version)," on their own product pages, while the Version 5 scheme rules published in the FAQ do not accept v3. If you hold only ITIL v3 Foundation and want the Practice Manager designation, confirm your specific route with PeopleCert before paying for a specialization exam.

Route 1: ITIL Strategic Leader — the Shortest Real Path

Foundation → Strategy → Transformation. Two upper exams, both 40 questions, 90 minutes, open book, 70%.

This is the fastest designation in the scheme and the one most people overlook, because "Strategic Leader" sounds like a capstone rather than an entry route. It is not gated by seniority. If your work is about where the service portfolio goes rather than how the service desk runs, this route gets you a designation in two exams instead of four.

Both Strategy and Transformation are currently English-only on their PeopleCert pages, and both list official eLearning as "coming soon" — so budget for an ATO course.

Route 2: ITIL Practice Manager — Two Exams, With a 2027 Deadline Attached

Foundation → one practice specialization → Transformation. Per the FAQ, you choose one of:

• Monitor, Support and Fulfil (MSF): Service Desk, Incident Management, Problem Management, Service Request Management, Monitoring and Event Management
• Plan, Implement and Control (PIC): Change Enablement, Deployment Management, Release Management, Service Configuration Management, IT Asset Management
• Collaborate, Assure and Improve (CAI): Relationship Management, Supplier Management, Service Level Management, Continual Improvement, Information Security Management

Here is the detail that no pathway diagram shows: there is no Version 5-branded specialization module. PeopleCert's live catalog lists these only as ITIL 4 Specialist: Monitor, Support, Fulfil, ITIL 4 Specialist: Plan Implement and Control, and ITIL 4 Specialist: Collaborate, Assure and Improve. So the Version 5 Practice Manager designation is currently earned by combining an ITIL 4 exam with a Version 5 exam.

That matters because the specialization exam does not follow the Version 5 upper-module format at all. ITIL 4 Specialist: Monitor, Support, Fulfil is 60 questions in 90 minutes, closed book, 65% — a different paper with a different preparation profile from the Transformation exam you will sit next to it.

And it has a clock on it. The PeopleCert ITIL FAQ states: "The current plan is to sunset all ITIL 4 modules on 31 December 2027." If Practice Manager is your target, take the specialization exam well before that date or watch for a Version 5 replacement rather than assuming one will arrive in time.

Route 3: ITIL Managing Professional — Four Upper Exams

Foundation → Product → Service → Experience → Transformation. All four upper modules share the 40-question, 90-minute, open-book, 70% format, so the difficulty is volume and cost rather than a step change in exam style.

Sequencing advice that follows from the format: take Product first if your organization's language has shifted to digital products, because it is the module with the widest language support (English, Chinese, French, Italian, Polish, and Spanish on its product page). Take Transformation last — it is the shared module, and passing it converts your accumulated modules into a designation.

Already an ITIL 4 Managing Professional, Master, or v3 Expert? Use MPT

The Managing Professional Transition (Version 5) route exists precisely so experienced holders do not sit four separate upper exams. Its product page lists the prerequisite as:

Any of the following ITIL designations: ITIL 4 Managing Professional or ITIL 4 Master or ITIL v3 Expert or ITIL v3 Master

Note that ITIL v3 Expert and v3 Master are accepted here, even though v3 Foundation and Intermediate are not accepted elsewhere in the scheme.

MPT is two exams, not one:

PeopleCert describes the recommended training as "as little as five days, compared to 8–12 days via the regular route," and says there are "currently no plans to sunset or limit the availability" of the transition route — unlike the ITIL 4 modules themselves. If you qualify, this is the cheapest and fastest way to the Managing Professional (Version 5) designation.

What Each Designation Actually Costs

PeopleCert list prices on the US product pages, including VAT, checked July 25, 2026. A 25% promotion was live on that date; both figures are shown because promotions expire and list prices persist.

Adding those up gives a floor for each designation, starting from zero ITIL certifications:

• Strategic Leader: US$690 + US$865 + US$865 = US$2,420
• Practice Manager: US$690 + US$867 + US$865 = US$2,422
• Managing Professional: US$690 + (US$865 × 4) = US$4,150
• Master: all seven exams = US$5,882

Treat those as floors, not budgets. The exam bundle contains the official eBook, exam voucher, and Learning Resource Kit — but not the accredited training that PeopleCert requires before releasing an upper-module result. The official eLearning bundle for Product, Service, and Experience is listed at US$1,338 each (US$1,003 promotional), and ATO-delivered training is priced by the provider, not published centrally. A realistic Managing Professional budget is therefore closer to US$6,000 than US$4,150.

The cost table also produces a genuinely useful comparison: Strategic Leader and Practice Manager cost within US$2 of each other. Choose between them on role fit, not price.

The Language Constraint Nobody Lists

Foundation (Version 5) is published in nine languages. The upper modules are not, and their current listings differ:

• Product (Version 5): English, Chinese, French, Italian, Polish, Spanish
• Service, Experience, Strategy, Transformation (Version 5): English only
• MPT (Version 5): English only

If you passed Foundation in Japanese, German, or Brazilian Portuguese, every route beyond Foundation currently requires sitting a technical open-book exam in a second language. PeopleCert's syllabus allows extra time for candidates testing outside their native or working language — the Transformation page lists 15 extra minutes — but confirm eligibility when you book rather than assuming it applies automatically.

Renewal: Each Module You Pass Resets the Clock

Version 5 certificates carry a three-year renewal date. The FAQ lists three renewal routes: log 20 CPD points per year for three consecutive years, pass another certification in the ITIL suite, or retake the same certification.

The middle route is the one that changes your plan. If you are progressing through a designation anyway, each upper module you pass renews your certification without a separate CPD program. Spreading Product, Service, Experience, and Transformation across three years is a renewal strategy as well as a study strategy.

Choose Your Route in Three Questions

1. Do you already hold ITIL 4 Managing Professional, ITIL 4 Master, ITIL v3 Expert, or ITIL v3 Master? Take the MPT route — two exams instead of four, and it is not scheduled to sunset.
2. Is your work practice-level operations (service desk, incidents, changes, suppliers)? Practice Manager, but book the ITIL 4 specialization before the 31 December 2027 sunset.
3. Is your work portfolio, investment, and direction rather than delivery? Strategic Leader — two upper exams, same price as Practice Manager, no sunset risk.

If none of those describe you and you want the broadest designation, Managing Professional is the four-exam route. If your goal is Master, plan the shared Transformation exam last so it converts all three streams at once.

Before You Book Anything

Confirm the current price, language, bundle contents, and training requirement for your chosen module on its own PeopleCert product page — module pages disagree with third-party roadmaps more often than they disagree with each other. Then check that your prerequisite is one PeopleCert actually accepts, since ITIL v3 Foundation is not one of them.
