Your Next ITIL Exam Is Decided by Designation, Not by Interest
Verified August 30, 2026 against the live PeopleCert ITIL certification catalog, the individual module pages, and the PeopleCert ITIL FAQ.
Once you hold ITIL Foundation (Version 5), there is no ranked "level 2." PeopleCert's scheme has three post-Foundation designation streams, and each one specifies the modules you must pass. Pick the designation first; the module list follows.
| Designation | Modules required after Foundation | Upper exams |
|---|---|---|
| ITIL Strategic Leader (ITIL SL) | Strategy + Transformation | 2 |
| ITIL Practice Manager (ITIL PM) | One bundled practice specialization (MSF, PIC, or CAI) + Transformation | 2 |
| ITIL Managing Professional (ITIL MP) | Product + Service + Experience + Transformation | 4 |
| ITIL Master | All three designations above | 7 exams total, including Foundation |
Two rules simplify the map. First, ITIL Transformation (Version 5) belongs to every designation, but the FAQ says it only needs to be completed once and counts across all three. Second, PeopleCert requires Accredited Training Organization training or ITIL Official eLearning for each post-Foundation module and will not release results without proof of completion.
This guide covers what comes after Foundation. If you are still preparing for that exam, use our ITIL Foundation (Version 5) exam guide. If you already hold ITIL 4 Foundation and are deciding whether to update the badge, use the Foundation Bridge decision guide.
What Is Available Now
PeopleCert's live catalog now has product pages and checkout choices for Foundation, Foundation Bridge, Product, Service, Experience, Strategy, Transformation, and the AI Governance extension. Official eLearning is available for all five designation-path upper modules: Product, Service, Experience, Strategy, and Transformation.
The three Practice Manager specializations remain listed under their ITIL 4 Specialist names: Monitor, Support and Fulfil; Plan, Implement and Control; and Collaborate, Assure and Improve. The current Version 5 scheme deliberately uses one of those bundled practice modules with Version 5 Transformation.
The Managing Professional Transition page lists Accredited Training Organization delivery while its official eLearning remains marked "coming soon." If you qualify for MPT, confirm the current learning channel and package on its own product page before purchasing. AI Governance is a purchasable extension certification, but it is not one of the modules required for PM, MP, SL, or Master.
The Five Designation-Path Upper Modules Share One Exam Format
PeopleCert currently publishes the same format for Product, Service, Experience, Strategy, and Transformation:
| Exam feature | Foundation (Version 5) | Product / Service / Experience / Strategy / Transformation |
|---|---|---|
| Questions | 40 multiple choice | 40 multiple choice |
| Duration | 60 minutes | 90 minutes |
| Book policy | Closed book | Open book |
| Pass mark | 65% (26/40) | 70% (28/40) |
| Training | Not listed as mandatory | ATO training or official eLearning required |
Open book is not unlimited lookup time: 90 minutes provides 135 seconds per question. Index the permitted official book before exam day and practice locating concepts without reading whole chapters. The 70% threshold means you may miss at most 12 of 40 questions.
Our mock-exam practice strategy for Version 5 explains how to run a diagnostic timed paper. The same error-log method transfers, but use 28/40 rather than Foundation's 26/40 as the minimum exam-equivalent line.
The Prerequisite Rule, and Who It Blocks
Each of the five upper-module pages lists the same certification prerequisite:
Any ITIL 4 certification or ITIL Foundation (Version 5) or ITIL Foundation Bridge (Version 5)
That settles two common questions:
- ITIL 4 certificate holders do not need the Bridge to progress. The optional Bridge updates Foundation-level knowledge and awards the Version 5 Foundation certificate.
- ITIL v3 Foundation and Intermediate certificates do not qualify. PeopleCert's FAQ directs those holders to Foundation (Version 5) before upper-level modules.
The ITIL 4 bundled-practice product pages still show their own older prerequisite wording. If you hold only an older ITIL credential, verify eligibility for your exact Practice Manager package with PeopleCert or the training provider before checkout.
Route 1: ITIL Strategic Leader
Foundation → Strategy → Transformation. This route has two upper exams, each with 40 questions, 90 minutes, open-book delivery, and a 70% pass mark.
Strategic Leader is not gated by job title or seniority. It fits work centered on organizational direction, investment, governance, and transformation. Strategy and Transformation are currently offered in English and both have official eLearning as well as accredited-provider training options.
Route 2: ITIL Practice Manager
Foundation → one bundled practice specialization → Transformation. The FAQ permits a free choice of one specialization:
- Monitor, Support and Fulfil (MSF): Service Desk, Incident Management, Problem Management, Service Request Management, Monitoring and Event Management
- Plan, Implement and Control (PIC): Change Enablement, Deployment Management, Release Management, Service Configuration Management, IT Asset Management
- Collaborate, Assure and Improve (CAI): Relationship Management, Supplier Management, Service Level Management, Continual Improvement, Information Security Management
These are currently ITIL 4 Specialist exams, not Version 5-branded exams. Their format also differs: each bundled specialization uses 60 multiple-choice questions in 90 minutes, is closed book, and requires 65%. Transformation then uses the Version 5 upper-module format.
PeopleCert's FAQ says the current plan is to sunset all ITIL 4 modules on 31 December 2027; voucher-validity details are still to be announced. Candidates targeting Practice Manager should monitor that FAQ and the chosen specialization page rather than treating the date as an already completed withdrawal.
Route 3: ITIL Managing Professional
Foundation → Product → Service → Experience → Transformation. All four upper modules use the same 40-question, 90-minute, open-book, 70% format. The order of those four is not prescribed on the official designation path, so sequence them around role relevance, language availability, and training schedules.
Product is the natural first choice for product-focused roles; Service fits operational and service-delivery roles; Experience focuses on human response and value; Transformation is shared with the other designation streams. Passing Transformation once satisfies that module wherever it appears.
Already an ITIL 4 MP, ITIL 4 Master, ITIL v3 Expert, or ITIL v3 Master? Check MPT
The Managing Professional Transition (Version 5) page accepts those four designations and packages two required exams that can be scheduled separately in either order:
| MPT exam | Questions | Duration | Book | Pass mark |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ITIL Transformation (Version 5) | 40 | 90 minutes | Open book | 70% |
| MPT – Product, Service, Experience (Version 5) | 60 | 120 minutes | Open book | 70% |
The FAQ describes recommended MPT training as as little as five days, compared with 8–12 days on the regular MP route. It currently reports no planned sunset or availability limit for MPT. Both exams must be passed to earn Managing Professional (Version 5).
How to Compare Current Prices Without Mixing Unlike Bundles
Do not budget from a copied US-dollar list or an expired promotion. PeopleCert's displayed price, currency, tax treatment, available bundle tiers, and promotions can change with the selected country and the live checkout. Accredited Training Organizations set their own course packages and prices.
Compare the same tier and required inclusions for every module:
| Offer type | What to verify before comparing |
|---|---|
| Exam Bundle | PeopleCert currently labels this for resitting learners; check the eBook, voucher, and Learning Resource Kit inclusions |
| Official eLearning | Check that interactive training and sample papers are included with the voucher and official materials |
| eLearning+ | Check the current mock-exam and retake benefits rather than assuming another tier includes them |
| ATO package | Confirm tuition format, exam voucher, books, training materials, resit coverage, taxes, and any provider fees |
For a designation budget, open each required module in the same region, choose equivalent training tiers, and record the live checkout total. Then add only provider costs not already included. A percentage promotion may apply to one tier, region, or period, so do not use its banner price as a durable path total.
Language Availability Can Change Your Route
Foundation is currently listed in nine exam languages. Product and Service each list eight: English, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Polish, Brazilian Portuguese, and Spanish. Experience, Strategy, Transformation, and MPT are currently English-only.
That difference matters if you passed Foundation in Japanese or prefer another language. PeopleCert gives candidates 25% more exam time when their native language differs from the exam language. Confirm the additional time is reflected in the booking before purchase.
Renewal: Another ITIL Exam Can Reset the Clock
PeopleCert issues Version 5 certificates with a three-year renewal date. Its FAQ gives three routes: join PeopleCert Plus and log 20 CPD points per year for three consecutive years, pass another certification in the ITIL product suite, or retake the same certification.
Because all ITIL certifications sit in the same product suite, passing a later ITIL module renews certificates in that suite. If you are building a designation gradually, check your account's renew-by dates and place the next exam before the earliest relevant deadline.
Choose Your Route in Three Questions
- Do you already hold ITIL 4 Managing Professional, ITIL 4 Master, ITIL v3 Expert, or ITIL v3 Master? Check the MPT route before buying four separate MP modules.
- Is your work practice-level operations, support, change, suppliers, or service improvement? Consider Practice Manager and monitor the planned ITIL 4 sunset.
- Is your work portfolio, investment, governance, and direction? Strategic Leader is the two-upper-exam route.
If none describes your target and you want broad product-and-service lifecycle coverage, Managing Professional is the four-upper-exam route. To reach Master from the new Foundation path, earn all three designations; shared Transformation counts once.
Before You Book
Confirm the module's prerequisite, exam language, training channel, bundle inclusions, selected-region currency, taxes, and final price on the live PeopleCert ITIL catalog. For Practice Manager, also confirm the chosen ITIL 4 specialization's voucher validity against the ITIL FAQ.
