The order defines the clinical question and intended examination. Confirming it against the patient's identity, history, and symptoms helps select the needed protocol and prevents an expertly performed study of the wrong patient or problem.

How should a prior echocardiogram guide the current examination?

Use it to identify known abnormalities, previous measurements, and views that require careful comparison. The prior result guides attention but must not cause the sonographer to overlook new or discordant findings.

What is the purpose of explaining an echocardiogram to the patient?

A clear explanation supports cooperation, informed participation, positioning, and breathing instructions while staying within scope. It should describe the procedure, not offer an unauthorized diagnosis or promise a result.

What ergonomic principle reduces scanning injury risk?

Keep the patient and equipment close enough to avoid sustained reaching and joint deviation, then adjust the bed, chair, and monitor before scanning. A good image obtained through repeated overreaching is not a safe technique.
