Complete Law School
Graduate from an ABA-accredited law school (3 years) or an approved California alternative. Complete the MPRE before or after the bar exam.
MBE Subjects (7 Core Areas)You are here
Master Real Property, Contracts, Torts, Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, Evidence, and Civil Procedure — these form 50% of your total score via the 200-question MBE.
California Essay Subjects
Study California-specific rules for Community Property, Professional Responsibility, Remedies, Business Associations, Wills & Trusts, and all MBE subjects. 5 essay questions count for 40% of score.
Performance Test & Timed Practice
Practice the Performance Test (PT) — a 90-minute closed-universe legal analysis task worth 10% of score. Take full timed simulated exams under test conditions.
Can You Take the California Bar Exam?
Check if you meet the basic eligibility requirements
- •Must pass the MPRE (Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination) separately
- •Moral Character Determination must be completed (can take 6+ months — apply early)
- •First-year law students must pass the FYLSX (Baby Bar) if attending a non-ABA school
- •Exam offered twice per year: February and July
