Matrix: the only factory

The matrix is the actively growing part of the nail. NIC's own sample item asks exactly that, and the correct answer is matrix, not lunula, mantle, or free edge. Matrix cells keratinize and are pushed forward to become nail plate. The matrix contains nerves, lymph, and blood vessels. A nick, burn, aggressive e-file skip, or crush injury in the matrix can leave a permanent ridge, split, constriction, or missing plate because you damaged the factory, not the product the factory already shipped.

Salon translation:

The lunula is the whitish half-moon, usually most visible on the thumb. It is the visible portion of the matrix. It looks white because the matrix is thicker there and the bed's blood is less visible, not because it is a separate bone. Do not scrape the lunula to "make it bigger."

The mantle is the deep fold of skin at the base — the pocket that holds the nail root and matrix. You will see mantle on outlines and as a distractor. It is not the growing tissue; the matrix is.

The free edge is the plate past the fingertip. Shape it to the client's requested form without sawing down into the hyponychium. Debris under the free edge is cleaned gently; a sharp tool jammed there tears the seal.

Cuticle versus eponychium versus hyponychium versus perionychium

This cluster is the highest-yield naming trap in the whole chapter.

  • Cuticle is dead, colorless tissue attached to the nail plate, shed from the underside of the proximal living skin. After a soak, you may gently ease that dead film off the plate with a pusher. You are cleaning the plate, not cutting a person.
  • Eponychium is living skin at the base of the plate that covers the matrix area. Clients call this "cuticle." The exam does not. Cutting eponychium is cutting living tissue. It bleeds, it becomes a portal of entry, and it can injure the matrix beneath.
  • Hyponychium is the slightly thickened skin under the free edge between plate and fingertip. It is a water and organism seal. Aggressive "cleaning under" with a sharp bit or a drill destroys that seal.
  • Perionychium is the living tissue that borders the nail — the frame around the plate. It includes the surrounding folds. Inflammation of this border is a disease-chapter finding; the structure itself is anatomy.

Nail folds are the folds of normal skin around the plate: the proximal nail fold at the base and the lateral nail folds (sidewalls) on each side. Nail grooves are the tracks the plate rides in. Product packed into a groove stays wet, lifts, and can sit against the fold.
