Exam traps in this table: calling every gel “gel polish.” Calling every gel “soak-off.” Using hard-gel builder as if it were a wipe-on polish that can stay uncured at the cuticle. Using a hybrid’s “soak-off” claim as permission to dunk a still-thick hard gel. Read the bottle you actually used.

Application still starts with 270 F 2: healthy natural nail only. Gel on onycholysis, paronychia, or a green lift is the same unlawful cover-up as acrylic on that unit. Both lamps supply UVA-range energy that a photoinitiator absorbs. Historical UV fluorescent units emit a broader UVA band (commonly discussed around ~365 nm). LED units typically emit narrower peaks (often near 365 nm and/or the ~395–405 nm region, depending on the diodes in that lamp). Gels are formulated for a matched initiator and lamp. A gel that lists an LED time on a named professional lamp is not promising the same result in a different spectrum.

Virginia’s 20 gel performances, and what they replaced

Until the December 1, 2025 curriculum update, nail-care performances included individual nail wraps. 18VAC41-20-220 E now reads:

DPOR’s nail-curriculum FAQ is blunt: nail wrap performances were swapped for UV/LED gel nails. If your school still logs “wraps” and zero gels after that effective date, the packet is stale. The 20 are individual gel nails, not 20 full sets unless the school’s log is counting fingers honestly. Gel polish on a natural nail and a hard-gel extension can both be gel performances if they are UV/LED gel services the school documents as such — ask how your school’s log defines the unit, but do not skip gels because “the practical doesn’t have a lamp.”

Wraps are not on the current 220 E table. Do not study silk wrap as if it were still a Virginia required performance. Domain 7 still wants gel literacy because that is what NIC wrote: soft, hard, hybrid, plus the lamp science.

Aftercare seed (post-service is Chapter 10.4 and Domain 8): tell the client the gel is a cured coating, not dry polish; do not pick it; book maintenance before it is a peeled weapon; come back for professional removal (Chapter 12) rather than prying.
