Practical Walkthrough: First Client, Cleansing, MLD, Particles, and LED

Key Takeaways

  • Prepare only after the proctor instructs you to begin; use the current Virginia and NIC practical bulletins.

  • The first service group is setup, cleansing, MLD, particle forehead microdermabrasion, and LED.

  • Practical supplies, English labels, client protection, and correct disposal are assessed throughout.

  • The particle and LED demonstrations require the specified handpieces with attached cords.

Use the state-assigned service list

Virginia assigns eleven master practical services. The first five are work-area and client preparation with supply setup, cleansing the face, manual lymphatic drainage, particle microdermabrasion on the forehead, and LED. The first setup has fifteen minutes; each of the following four has ten minutes. These are examination task windows, not recommended clinical treatment durations or exposure doses.

Read the current NIC practical introduction and the Virginia bulletin together. Follow the rules for model, equipment, mock products, kit handling, and identity in the actual appointment instructions. Bring all required materials; do not assume you can borrow a missing item. Use real hand sanitizer and the specified disinfectant arrangements, with original English manufacturer labeling where required. The practical's permitted mock materials must not be treated as live clinical products.

Set up a clean workflow

Wait until instructed to begin. Disinfect the work area completely with the required EPA-registered bactericidal, virucidal, and fungicidal product, sanitize hands, and arrange universal supplies plus supplies for the first group. Prepare the client and maintain protection and draping. Labels must be legible in English under the bulletin's requirements.

Use separate containers for items to be disinfected, soiled linens, and trash. Keep the kit closed except when retrieving needed items under the instructions, and do not return used materials to clean supply. A contaminated glove touching a clean jar or handpiece can undermine several later tasks. Practice movements between zones so sanitation does not depend on remembering a warning after the contact has occurred.

Cleansing demonstration

Use visibly clean implements and labeled products. Cleanse the eye area and lips appropriately, distribute cleanser over the face, remove residual makeup or cleanser, and apply the specified toner or astringent step. Maintain draping and dispose of used supplies correctly. Do not skip the eye or lip step because the model has no visible makeup; the bulletin assesses demonstration of the procedure.

Rehearse controlling product near the eyes and mouth, changing applicators as needed, and avoiding cross-contamination. The examiner must be able to see what was done. A rushed wiping motion that leaves residue does not demonstrate complete removal. Step back when finished as instructed rather than beginning the next service early.

MLD demonstration

The practical specifies simultaneous work on both sides at three regions: between thyroid cartilage and sternocleidomastoid; between earlobe and masseter; and the supraorbital ridge. The scoring tasks specify eight to ten rotations at each, using slow stationary finger-pad circles where specified. At the brow, lay the finger pads flat above the eyebrows and curl the fingertips below them to work along the supraorbital ridge, with both sides addressed together. Apply the required massage product and remove residual product afterward.

This is a scoring sequence. It does not authorize deep compression of carotid or thyroid structures or prove that every clinical MLD protocol must use precisely these repeats. Rehearse landmarks gently with qualified instruction. Maintain draping, clean handling, and the same disposal categories throughout. Traditional dry-method descriptions should not cause you to omit the practical's product task.

Particle microdermabrasion demonstration

Prepare the forehead with the required degreaser or preparation solution, dry excess moisture, and apply model eye protection. The candidate wears eye protection, a mask covering nose and mouth, and gloves. Demonstrate both vertical and horizontal strokes across the entire forehead using the simulated handpiece with its cord attached. Remove particles from the treated area and maintain draping and correct disposal.

A diamond-tip demonstration does not replace the state-specified particle service. Do not add actual aggressive abrasion or invented pressure settings to an examination simulation. Equipment and mock-product instructions control what is demonstrated. Rehearse forehead coverage and protective-equipment sequence so neither disappears when the clock is running.

LED and transition to the next group

For LED, dry excess moisture and protect the model's eyes. Hold the handpiece so the light strikes the skin and move around the entire face, with the cord attached as specified. Complete the service while maintaining draping. Do not replace the demonstration with an unrelated acne wavelength schedule or leave a handpiece parked at one point because a clinic array works differently.

The NIC instructions then provide a five-minute breakdown between groups. Dispose of used supplies correctly and wait for the next directions. Do not set up or perform new services before permission to begin. The later new-client preparation is an assessed task, not a continuation of the first clean layout.

Rehearse observable competence

Use a timer and a task sheet based on the current bulletin. Have a qualified instructor observe whether protection is maintained, cords are attached, labels are visible, required regions are covered, products are removed, and containers are used correctly. Record an actual missed task instead of simply noting completed within time. Completing early does not compensate for omitted protection or contamination.

When the proctor calls stop, stop. When finished, step back to signal completion. A memorized sequence helps only if it follows the current service list and instructions. The goal is clear, safe, observable handling of every task, including preparation and cleanup between procedures.
