Galvanic Current: Desincrustation and Iontophoresis
Key Takeaways
Galvanic devices use direct current; electrode polarity matters for electrochemical effects.
Desincrustation commonly uses a negative active electrode and a compatible alkaline preparation.
Iontophoresis uses an electrode of the same charge as the intended ion to repel it.
Products, current, contact area, and any polarity reversal follow the particular system instructions.
Recognize direct current and polarity
Galvanic current is direct current used in esthetics for electrochemical cleansing and iontophoretic delivery. The circuit commonly has an active treatment electrode and a larger return electrode. Both contacts must be positioned and prepared according to the apparatus instructions. The return electrode completes the treatment circuit; calling it an inactive electrode does not mean that no current passes at its contact.
The positive electrode is the anode and the negative electrode is the cathode in this electrolytic treatment context. Conventional current direction and electron movement are opposite descriptions. For examination purposes, focus on which electrode is active, the charge of the intended product ions, and the complete contact arrangement. Guessing polarity from a serum's color or a marketing name is unreliable.
Desincrustation and alkaline chemistry
Desincrustation is a cleansing preparation intended to soften follicular contents and facilitate suitable extractions. Traditional esthetics teaching associates the negative active electrode with anaphoresis and an alkaline effect. The cathode can generate hydroxide through electrochemical reactions. Alkalinity can soften keratin and support emulsification of oily material, but a facial does not guarantee complete conversion of every comedone into liquid soap.
Saponification is the alkaline hydrolysis of fats, producing fatty-acid salts and glycerol from triglycerides. This is the chemistry behind the textbook cleansing explanation. The base is a reactant, not the product made by saponification. Do not compound lye or a bicarbonate solution for facial use based on a simplified reaction. Use the formulated desincrustation medium designed for the machine.
Pores do not have tiny muscles that mechanically open under a negative electrode and close under a positive one. Changes in surface condition and follicular contents may affect their appearance, but phrases such as pore opening are cosmetic shorthand. They should not be interpreted as proof that a treatment locks bacteria out or permanently changes follicular diameter.
Iontophoresis: like charges repel
Iontophoresis moves suitable charged substances under an electrical field. If a formulation contains the intended positively charged ion, the positive active electrode repels that ion away from the electrode. A negatively charged target ion uses the negative active electrode. The return electrode has the opposite polarity. This principle does not establish the charge of every ingredient in a mixture.
Read the product instructions and the equipment instructions together. The formulation's charge can depend on chemical form and pH. Not every peptide serum is positively charged, and not every acidic product is intended for a negative electrode. A cosmetic oil cannot be assumed to work as an iontophoretic preparation simply because it contains a desirable ingredient.
| Question before use | Information needed |
|---|---|
| Is the product designed for this modality? | Manufacturer compatibility and intended use |
| Which polarity is specified? | Instructions for the complete formulation |
| What contact medium is required? | Approved gel, pad, or solution and how to maintain it |
| How is the return electrode prepared? | Size, placement, covering, and contact directions |
| How is output ended? | Safe reduction, removal, and any subsequent steps |
Current density and contact control
Current density is current divided by contact area. A small electrode can concentrate exposure compared with a larger electrode at the same total current. A drying pad, poor skin contact, broken lead, or localized pressure can produce uneven effects. Maintain the prescribed medium and contact without improvising extra pressure to make an electrode work.
Begin and end output as directed by the machine. Do not pull away an energized electrode or change polarity at full output unless the instructions expressly describe that operation. If the client reports unexpected burning, stop rather than asking them to tolerate it. Inspect the skin, contacts, medium, and machine before deciding whether any future use is appropriate.
Traditional protocols may include a positive-polarity step after negative-polarity cleansing. That is not evidence for a Virginia law requiring exactly two or three minutes of reversal after every desincrustation. Follow the trained product and apparatus sequence. Remove residual product and provide appropriate aftercare; do not promise that the display setting has measured or restored the client's precise skin pH.
Screening and an applied example
Implanted electronic devices and other listed contraindications require careful screening. Do not reroute electrodes around a pacemaker, metal implant, or dental appliance as an improvised exception. Avoid current paths and regions excluded by the instructions. Medical advice does not automatically cancel a machine's contraindication.
Suppose a product is labeled for iontophoresis of a negatively charged ingredient with a particular compatible console. The active contact uses the specified negative polarity, while the opposite return completes the circuit. An unmarked replacement serum is unsuitable until its compatibility and polarity instructions are established. The correct response is to verify the product, not infer its charge from the word hydrating.
After treatment, process electrodes by the manufacturer-compatible method and Virginia requirements. Electrical components must not be submerged unless specifically designed for it. Record the machine, products, settings, regions, and actual response. This preserves useful information for future selection without claiming that every client should receive the same current or duration.
