Current Exam Structure, Scheduling, and a Study Plan
Key Takeaways
Prov administers the NIC Esthetics Advanced Practice written and practical examinations for Virginia master candidates.
The national theory outline is 30% Scientific Concepts and 70% Services, with a 90-minute testing time.
Virginia includes ten state questions within theory; the current bulletin does not explain the combined scoring arithmetic or publish a passing cut score.
Current exam fees are $99 theory and $95 practical; licensing payments are separate.
Use the correct examination
Virginia master-esthetician candidates take the NIC Esthetics Advanced Practice written and practical examinations administered by Prov. DPOR identifies Prov as its vendor effective January 1, 2025. The current Virginia bulletin reviewed here is dated January 28, 2026; the linked NIC advanced theory and practical materials are the controlling preparation references. Basic esthetics, master esthetics, and instructor examinations are different assignments. Resolve an uncertain assignment with the Board before paying to schedule.
The national theory bulletin specifies ninety minutes and 110 items, with 100 weighted items. Its outline allocates 30% to Scientific Concepts and 70% to Services. Virginia's bulletin separately states that ten Virginia law questions are included within the Virginia NIC theory exam, using 18VAC41-70. It does not explain how those questions are combined with the national item and scoring structure. Do not infer either 120 total questions or exactly 100 scored national items plus ten scored Virginia items from these two statements.
The current sources reviewed do not publish a Virginia master passing cut score. Confirm the applicable standard through the current candidate instructions or Prov/DPOR rather than treating an unsupported 75% claim as verified. A practice-bank percentage is a study measure, not an official scaled-score conversion. Likewise, the Virginia-specific bank has 133 questions, and its routed practice page also includes 100 national master-esthetics questions, for 233 practice questions when checked. This inventory is separate from the licensing exam's confirmed scored count.
Plan study around the actual outline
| Study area | Priority and method |
|---|---|
| Scientific Concepts | Thirty percent of the national outline; learn infection control, safety, products, aging, therapy awareness, and medical terminology |
| Services | Seventy percent; practice selection, contraindications, products, handling, removal, and documentation across all listed modalities |
| Virginia law | Study the current chapter, including scope, licensure, facilities, sanitation, and reporting |
| Practical | Rehearse all eleven required services and the sanitation transitions between them |
For an illustrative ten-hour theory review allocation, three hours for science and seven for services reflects the national 30:70 split. Add dedicated Virginia-law review and practical rehearsal rather than assuming they fit an invented fourth-domain percentage. Adjust hours to weaknesses, but do not omit waxing, sugaring, extraction, aromatherapy, RF awareness, or regenerative-treatment terminology because peels feel more advanced.
Use short diagnostic quizzes to find a misunderstanding, then return to the relevant teaching. For missed device questions, distinguish energy type, intended effect, contraindication, medium, region, and shutdown procedure. For missed law questions, identify the actual section and condition. Memorizing a phrase without its exception can produce a wrong answer even when the number is familiar.
Registration, scheduling, and fees
Use the current application route and obtain approval to test. Prov's registration portal and approval email provide scheduling instructions. Current written and practical fees are $99 and $95 respectively, totaling $194 if both are taken. Retaking a component incurs its applicable fee. Initial licensure fees and any licensing surcharge are separate from this examination total.
Theory can be taken at approved locations or through the approved remote option introduced January 17, 2026. Remote candidates use Examroom.ai and must meet equipment, environment, identity, and proctoring requirements. Verify the equipment beforehand rather than assuming a familiar browser or Chromebook will work. Practical testing requires the assigned location and candidate-supplied materials under the bulletin.
Free cancellation or rescheduling requires at least three days before theory and seven days before practical. Missing the appointment or these deadlines ordinarily forfeits the fee; documented emergencies have the bulletin's review process. Read the confirmation's date, time, location, identity rules, and check-in instructions. Do not use a general arrival estimate as a replacement for the actual appointment requirements.
Results, retakes, and statutory deadlines
Prov states that official results are emailed twenty-four hours after completion and sent electronically to DPOR. Failed examinations can be retaken without a waiting period, subject to available appointments. This scheduling policy does not remove Virginia's licensing deadlines.
Under section 40, a passed component is retained if both exams are passed within one year of the initial examination date. The starting point is the initial examination, not the later successful component. An applicant who does not pass reexamination within that year must submit a new application. Anyone failing to apply for initial licensure within five years after passing both must retake both.
Section 70 permits one eligible ninety-day temporary license with the required direct supervision; it is not repeated indefinitely or created by an exam booking receipt. Verify issuance and supervision before practicing. Passing exams alone also does not establish that a full license is currently effective.
Rehearse and maintain a final checklist
Practice theory pacing using the confirmed ninety-minute window without pretending an unofficial mock count is the exact state format. Rehearse practical instructions with a timer, clean and contaminated zones, English labels, required protective equipment, and complete supply preparation. After each run, record omitted tasks and contamination errors, not just whether the time limit was met.
Before exam day, recheck the official bulletins for changes. Use the exam outline for coverage, the Virginia bulletin for state logistics and assigned services, and law for legal obligations. This three-source approach prevents outdated vendor information or a national example from being mistaken for a current Virginia requirement.
