Commercial Garages (Article 511)

Article 511 applies to areas used for service and repair of self-propelled vehicles powered by volatile flammable liquids or flammable gases — automobiles, buses, trucks, tractors, motorcycles, ATVs. Adjacent areas are not classified if mechanically ventilated at ≥4 air changes per hour or if walls/partitions effectively cut off the area [511.3(E)].

Classification of the Garage

  • Pit, below-grade, or subfloor work area: classification turns entirely on ventilation. Where the pit is exhausted at not less than 1 cfm/sq ft of its floor area, drawn from a point within 12 in. of the pit floor, the pit is unclassified. Where that ventilation is not provided, the pit is Class I, Division 1 in a major repair garage [511.3(C)(3)] and Class I, Division 2 extending up to floor level in a minor repair garage [511.3(D)(3)].
  • Repair area (above floor): in a major repair garage with no mechanical ventilation, the entire floor area up to 18 in. above the floor is Class I, Division 2; above 18 in. it is unclassified. Ventilating the floor area at 4 air changes per hour (or 1 cfm/sq ft), exhausted within 12 in. of the floor, makes the floor area unclassified. In a minor repair garage the floor areas are unclassified to begin with.

Wiring and Equipment Rules

Motor Fuel Dispensing Facilities (Article 514)

Applies where Class I liquids (flash point <100°F) are stored, handled, or dispensed. The classification footprint is in Table 514.3(B)(1):

  • For an outdoor dispenser [Table 514.3(B)(1)]: Division 1 covers the inside of the dispenser enclosure and any pit, box, or space below grade level, any part of which lies within a classified location. Type 1 Essential Electrical System (517.25–517.30)

Required for Category 1 spaces; permitted for Category 2. Type 1 EES has three separate branches:

  1. Life Safety Branch — fire alarm systems, egress lighting, communications systems essential to building life safety.
  2. Critical Branch — life support equipment, operating room loads, loads that allow staff to finish or stabilize a procedure during power loss.
  3. Equipment Branch — HVAC, elevators, and other loads essential to building operation.

Type 2 EES (permitted for Category 2)

Has two branches: Life Safety Branch and Equipment Branch. No Critical Branch is required because the risk of injury is lower.

Transfer Switch Requirements

  • For Type 1 EES, the life safety and critical branches must each have a separate automatic transfer switch (ATS) per 517.31(C). The equipment branch may use a time-delayed or manual transfer arrangement.
  • Transfer switches must be identified for emergency system use.
  • The alternate source must be able to supply the load within 10 seconds of loss of the normal source for life safety and critical branches.

Patient Care Space Wiring (517.13)

In patient care spaces, two equipment grounding paths are required:

  • (A) A metal raceway or metal cable assembly that qualifies as an equipment grounding return path per 250.118, AND
  • (B) An insulated copper equipment grounding conductor (sized per 250.122) installed in the raceway or cable.

The two paths provide redundancy. A single EGC in PVC conduit would not satisfy 517.13(A) — the metal raceway path is mandatory unless a listed nonmetallic raceway system with a bonded copper conductor sized to the equivalent impedance is used in a listed assembly. In addition, 517.14 requires panelboards serving normal and essential branch circuits to the same patient care area to be bonded together with an insulated continuous copper conductor (≥10 AWG).

Wiring Separation

Per 517.31(C), life safety and critical branch wiring must be separated from other circuits and clearly marked. Branches cannot share raceways or enclosures with non-EES wiring (with specific exceptions). Mechanical protection in patient care areas requires nonflexible metal raceways or concrete-encased conduits.

Places of Assembly (Article 518) and Theaters (Article 520)
