Box-fill questions appear in nearly every form, from "what is the minimum volume required?" to "how many #12 conductors can legally fit in this box?" The calculation is systematic — five categories, each with clear rules — and once you master the method, every box-fill question becomes a quick arithmetic exercise.

Box Volume vs. Box Fill — The Core Concept

314.16(A) Box volume is the total internal volume of the box, in cubic inches, plus any plaster ring or extension ring volume. Standard box volumes are listed in Table 314.16(A); for non-standard or custom boxes, the volume must be calculated from the box dimensions.

314.16(B) Box fill is the sum of volume allowances for every item inside the box — conductors, clamps, support fittings, devices, and grounding conductors.

The rule: Box volume must be greater than or equal to box fill. If fill exceeds volume, the box is overfilled and violates 314.16.

The Five Fill Categories [314.16(B)(1)–(5)]

Every box-fill calculation has up to five components:

1. Conductor Fill [314.16(B)(1)]

  • Each conductor originating outside the box that terminates or is spliced inside = 1 volume allowance (at its own size).
  • Each unbroken conductor passing through the box = 1 volume allowance.
  • A loop of unbroken conductor at least twice the 300.14 minimum free length = 2 volume allowances.

Answer: The box must have a minimum volume of 18.00 in³.

A standard 4 in. × 4 in. × 1½ in. square box (approximately 21.0 in³) exceeds the 18.00 in³ minimum and is compliant. A 4 in. × 4 in. × 1¼ in. box (approximately 18.0 in³) would just meet the minimum but leaves no practical margin for workmanship.

What If the Device Is on a Different-Size Conductor?

If the receptacle in the example above were connected to #10 conductors instead of #12, the device yoke allowance would be 2 × 2.50 = 5.00 in³ (based on the largest conductor terminating on the device). The other #12 conductors would still use 2.25 in³ each. This is a common exam twist — always use the largest conductor terminating on the device for the yoke allowance, which may differ from the largest conductor in the box.

Exam Traps

  • Device yoke = 2, not 1: This is the single most common box-fill error. Every device yoke counts as two of the largest connected conductor.
  • Count the EGC: The EGC counts as 1 volume (for up to 4 EGCs), based on the largest EGC. Do not forget it.
  • Pigtails don't count: Conductors that start and end inside the box (pigtails, bonding jumpers within the box) are not counted.
  • Largest conductor drives clamps and devices: The clamp and device allowances are based on the largest conductor entering the box or terminating on the device, not on the conductor's own size.
  • Upsizing for voltage drop: If you upsize conductors from #14 to #12 for voltage drop, every allowance tied to that conductor increases by 0.25 in³ — this can push a compliant box into violation.
