Treating textured hair as a specialty rather than a core competency will cost you points and clients.

Two clinical consequences follow directly and both are testable:

  1. Coily hair is more fragile at equal diameter. Every bend is a stress concentration. Mechanical damage from combing, tension styling and rough towel drying does more harm here than anywhere else.
  2. Coily hair reads as dry even when the scalp produces normal sebum, because the oil physically cannot travel the coil. The answer is added emollient and sealed moisture, not more washing.

Two cautions worth stating to a client. First, most heads carry more than one pattern — a looser crown and a tighter nape is normal. Second, pattern does not determine porosity, density or strand diameter; a 4C head can have fine, low-porosity strands and needs to be treated as such.

Co-washing does not replace clarifying. Silicone and mineral films accumulate and will block penetration of colour, relaxer or perm solution, producing patchy results and a failed strand test. Before a chemical service, clarify — then assess porosity again, because clarifying changes it.

Water temperature should be warm, not hot. Hot water swells the cuticle further and strips more lipid.

The balance is the whole skill. Too much protein on hair that needs moisture produces stiff, straw-like, snapping strands; too much moisture without protein on damaged hair produces limp, mushy, over-elastic hair that stretches and does not recoil. Read the elasticity test: hair that stretches and stays stretched needs protein; hair that will not stretch and snaps needs moisture.

The LOC / LCO sequences — liquid, oil, cream or liquid, cream, oil — are simply an ordering convention for applying water-based product, then emollient, then sealant, to trap moisture in the strand.


Detangling: the highest-risk routine step

More textured hair is broken during detangling than during any chemical service.

  1. Detangle wet, never dry, and never on soaking-wet unconditioned hair.
  2. Saturate with slip — a conditioner or detangler with enough glide that the comb moves without drag.
  3. Work in four or more sections, clipping the rest away.
  4. Start at the ends and work upward in short passes toward the scalp. Starting at the root drives every tangle into a single knot at the ends.
  5. Use fingers first, then a wide-tooth comb. Fine combs and brushes belong nowhere near this step.
  6. Stop and separate knots by hand rather than pulling through them.
  7. Never use a natural-bristle brush in a Virginia salon at all — 18VAC41-20-270 D 4 prohibits natural hairbrushes outright because they cannot be immersion-disinfected.

Drying follows the same logic: blot with a microfibre towel or a cotton T-shirt rather than rubbing with terry cloth, which roughens the cuticle and creates frizz.

Porosity, not curl pattern, is what most often explains why a product "does not work" on a given head.


Scalp care under textured styles

  • Protective and long-wear styles reduce manipulation, but tension at the perimeter is the leading cause of traction alopecia. Braids and installs must never produce visible tension bumps, pain, or stinging at the hairline.
  • Cleanse the scalp even between full wash days — a diluted cleanser applied directly to the scalp with an applicator bottle prevents the buildup that drives flaking and folliculitis.
  • Recognise and refer: tinea capitis, folliculitis, seborrheic dermatitis, central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia and any painful pustular condition are medical referrals. Under 18VAC41-20-270 A 4, licensees must take sufficient measures to prevent transmission of communicable and infectious diseases, and 18VAC41-20-280 (16) makes failure to do so a ground for discipline.
  • Heat discipline. Repeated high-heat pressing and flat-ironing on coily hair produces heat damage — permanently loosened curl pattern — which is not reversible by conditioning. Use the lowest effective temperature and a heat protectant, and record the result on the client card.
