Section 8.3 covers what enhancement products are. This section covers what you do with them for the next two years of the client's life — the part of the NIC sub-topic that reads "apply, maintain, and remove nail enhancements." Virginia backs it with 30 minimum performances of individual sculptured nails and nail tips inside the cosmetology programme (18VAC41-20-220 D); the standalone nail technician programme goes further still, at 170 sculptured nails and tips and 20 individual removals (18VAC41-20-220 E).
Two Virginia rules that govern everything here
Both live in 18VAC41-20-270 F, and both are single sentences worth memorising verbatim:
- F 2 — "An artificial nail must only be applied to a healthy natural nail." A nail with active infection, onycholysis, an unexplained discolouration, a bruise beneath the plate, or damage from a previous service is not a candidate. The service is postponed and, where indicated, the client is referred.
- F 3 — "A nail drill or motorized instrument must be used on the artificial nail surface only." The e-file removes product. It does not thin, etch, ring or shape the natural nail plate. Rings of fire, thinned plates and the resulting onycholysis are the standard consequence of ignoring this, and the rule leaves no room for interpretation.
Add F 1: clients for nail-care services must cleanse their hands immediately before the service, and the technician cleanses hands before every client.
Why enhancements lift
Lifting is a bonding failure, and almost all of it is preventable at the prep stage.

Lifting is not cosmetic. The gap between plate and product traps moisture and becomes an anaerobic pocket — the exact environment Pseudomonas aeruginosa needs.
The fill / rebalance cycle
- Fill (backfill / rebalance) interval: 2 to 3 weeks. Nails grow roughly 1/10 to 1/8 inch per month, so by three weeks the stress area has moved off the enhancement's support point.
- A fill adds product to the new growth area and re-blends the surface.
- A rebalance goes further: it relocates the apex (the highest, strongest point of the enhancement) back over the stress area, thins the free edge, and restores the correct C-curve and structure. Without rebalancing, the apex migrates toward the free edge and the nail becomes top-heavy and prone to breaking at the stress point.
Fill procedure, in order:
- Remove polish; sanitise your hands and have the client cleanse theirs (270 F 1).
- Inspect the whole nail unit. Any lifting, discolouration, odour, tenderness or separation changes the plan.
- File away all lifted product and any product that will not bond — with the drill on the product only (270 F 3), or by hand.
- Gently push back the eponychium and remove non-living tissue from the plate; do not cut living tissue.
- Lightly buff the new growth area only, dehydrate, and prime per the manufacturer.
- Apply product to the new growth, blend the seam, and rebalance the apex.
- Shape, refine, buff, apply cuticle oil, and finish.

Pseudomonas, and the discolouration that is not a fungus
Greenish-yellow to dark green or black discolouration beneath a lifted enhancement is nearly always a Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacterial infection, not "nail fungus."
What to do:
- Remove the enhancement completely.
- Do not scrape or drill the discoloured area, and do not attempt to bleach it.
- Leave the natural nail bare so it can dry out; the stain grows out with the plate.
- Do not reapply an enhancement over it — that is the F 2 point exactly.
- Refer to a physician if the discolouration is in the nail bed rather than the plate, if there is pain, swelling, pus, odour or spreading, or if it does not improve as the nail grows.

Removal, by product family
Never pry, and never force. Prying an enhancement off takes layers of the natural nail plate with it, which is why so many clients believe enhancements "ruined" their nails when what ruined them was removal.

Acetone safety. Acetone is a flammable solvent. Under 18VAC41-20-270 E 3 flammable chemicals must be labelled and stored in a nonflammable storage cabinet or a properly ventilated room, and under E 4 they must be separated from oxidizers and catalysts in storage. Work in a ventilated area, keep it away from any ignition source, and expect it to dehydrate skin and nail — always finish a removal with cuticle oil and a hydrating treatment.
After removal: the plate will look dull and feel thin because it has been under product. Buff minimally or not at all, oil daily, and give the client a realistic timeline — a fingernail replaces itself in roughly 4 to 6 months, so a genuinely damaged plate needs that long, not a fortnight.
Home care that actually protects the work
- Cuticle oil daily — it keeps product flexible and the surrounding tissue healthy.
- Gloves for cleaning, gardening and dishwashing; prolonged water exposure and household solvents are the enemies of adhesion.
- Nails are not tools. Opening, prying and scraping is how stress-area breaks happen.
- Come in for fills on schedule. A client who stretches three weeks to six arrives with a migrated apex, lifting, and often a break.
- Report anything unusual immediately — pain, warmth, odour, discolouration or separation.
