2.2 Synonyms & Antonyms

What These Items Look Like

A typical PAF verbal item reads: Choose the word most nearly OPPOSITE in meaning to LOVELY. or Choose the word most nearly SIMILAR in meaning to METICULOUS. You get four options and one correct answer. The wording "most nearly" is important: it tells you the match will not be perfect, so you are looking for the closest available option, not an identical twin.

The Two-Step Method

1. Fix connotation and register first. Before you read a single option, decide whether the stem word is positive, neutral, or negative, and whether it is formal, everyday, or technical. Meticulous is positive and formal. Cognizant is neutral and formal. Lovely is positive and everyday. This thumbnail blocks the most common trap: picking a word that is merely the same register but the wrong meaning.
2. Predict, then scan. Whisper your own synonym or antonym, then scan the four options for the closest match to your prediction. If your prediction is close to one option and far from the other three, commit. If two options are close, your prediction was too loose; tighten it with a more specific gloss.

Worked Examples

Synonym. METICULOUS — Options: (A) CARELESS (B) THOROUGH (C) FAST (D) QUICK.

Connotation: positive, formal. Predict: "very careful about detail." Scan: THOROUGH matches the careful-detail sense. CARELESS is the antonym. FAST and QUICK are about speed, not care. Answer: B.

Antonym. COGNIZANT — Options: (A) AWARE (B) INFORMED (C) UNAWARE (D) FORGETFUL.

Cognizant means "aware of, having knowledge of" — positive/neutral, formal. Its antonym should mean "lacking awareness." UNAWARE is the direct reversal. AWARE and INFORMED are synonyms (same-topic distractors). FORGETFUL is about losing stored memory, not about present awareness, so it is a near-miss. Answer: C.

Antonym. LOVELY — Options: (A) BEAUTIFUL (B) PRETTY (C) UGLY (D) CHARMING.

Lovely is positive, everyday. Antonym must be negative and about appearance. UGLY is the direct reversal. BEAUTIFUL, PRETTY, and CHARMING are all synonyms or near-synonyms placed to catch students who read only the first option. Answer: C.

The Same-Topic Distractor

PAF item writers love to cluster three options from the same semantic field as the stem. For a stem like AIRCRAFT, you may see options such as AIRPORT, AVIATION, and RUNWAY. All are aviation-related, but none is a synonym of AIRCRAFT. The real synonym (AEROPLANE, PLANE) is the one that shares the meaning, not just the topic. The connotation-and-predict method defeats this trap because your own predicted synonym is meaning-based, not topic-based.

High-Yield Vocabulary

The PAF verbal bank draws from a mid-level formal register. The table below lists words that recur across synonym and antonym items. Drill each in both directions: give the word, name a synonym, name an antonym.

Register Awareness

Many PAF stems pair a formal word with informal distractors or vice versa. If the stem is formal (cognizant), the correct synonym or antonym is usually formal too (unaware rather than clueless). Mismatched register is a reliable eliminate signal, even when the meaning is close.

Speed Notes

Because the verbal battery is mixed and timed, do not linger on a single vocabulary item for more than 20 seconds. If two options stay close after one pass, mark your best guess, move on, and return only if time remains. Blank answers score zero; a smart guess has a 25% floor.

Connotation Reversal Traps

Some antonym items dress the stem in a positive word but offer a negative option that is not the true opposite — it merely carries the opposite tone. For example, the antonym of frugal is lavish or wasteful, not generous. Generous is positive, like frugal, but it reverses the wrong axis (giving vs. saving) rather than the core axis (careful vs. careless with resources). When you predict an antonym, name the axis the stem operates on before scanning. Frugal is about restraint with resources, so its antonym must be about lack of restraint with resources, not about a different virtue. The same trap appears with diligent (the antonym is lazy, not relaxed, because relaxed reverses tone but not the effort axis) and with tenacious (the antonym is yielding, not flexible, because flexible is a positive way of giving way, not the core reversal of holding firmly).

Synonym. FORMIDABLE — Options: (A) WEAK (B) DAUNTING (C) SMALL (D) FRIENDLY.

Connotation: formidable is positive-to-neutral, formal, meaning inspiring respect or fear. Predict: "powerful enough to demand respect." Scan: DAUNTING matches. WEAK is the antonym. SMALL is a size word and the wrong sense. FRIENDLY is a tone reversal, not a meaning match. Answer: B.

Antonym. TENACIOUS — Options: (A) YIELDING (B) STUBBORN (C) RESOLUTE (D) FIRM.

Tenacious means holding firmly. The antonym must be about releasing or not holding. YIELDING matches. STUBBORN, RESOLUTE, and FIRM are all synonyms placed as same-topic distractors. Answer: A.

Antonym. VERBOSE — Options: (A) CONCISE (B) WORDY (C) LENGTHY (D) TALKATIVE.

Verbose means using more words than needed. The antonym must be about using few words. CONCISE matches. WORDY and LENGTHY are synonyms, and TALKATIVE is a near-topic distractor that describes someone who talks a lot but not necessarily with the redundant wordiness verbose implies. Answer: A.
