  3. Chirality (handedness) — a right-pointing arrow stays a right-pointing arrow in terms of its internal structure; only its global direction changes.

The only thing that changes is orientation: where the figure's features point relative to the page.

The Reference-Feature Method

Trying to rotate the whole figure at once is error-prone. Instead, anchor a single, asymmetric feature and track only that feature:

  1. Pick a reference feature — a marked corner, a dot, an arrowhead, a notch, or any element that is not centrally symmetric.
  2. Note its starting position in clock terms (12 o'clock, 3 o'clock, 6 o'clock, 9 o'clock).
  3. Read its final position in the same clock terms.
  4. Convert the clock move to an angle — each quarter of the clock face is 90°.

A figure is an arrow pointing to the top-right (toward 1:30). In the answer choices, the same arrow points to the bottom-left (toward 7:30). What is the rotation?

  • The arrow tip moves from 1:30 to 7:30 — that is, from the upper-right to the lower-left.
  • That is a half-turn of the clock face.
  • A half-turn is 180°. Direction does not matter for 180° because CW and CCW half-turns land in the same place.

Answer: 180° rotation.

Worked Example 2 — Sequence Continuation

A sequence shows the same L-shaped figure in four frames. The short arm of the L points: right, down, left, up. What is the next orientation?

  • right → down: 90° CW.
  • down → left: 90° CW.
  • left → up: 90° CW.

Common Traps

Trap 1 — Clockwise vs Counter-Clockwise

A 90° CW turn and a 90° CCW turn produce different figures unless the figure has rotational symmetry. Read the direction from the movement of your reference feature, not from a vague impression of "it turned".

Trap 2 — Mirror-Rotation Confusion

A 180° rotation keeps the figure in the plane. A mirror image flips the figure out of the plane — the handedness reverses. For an asymmetric letter such as R, a 180° rotation still reads as an R (just upside down); a mirror image reads as a backwards R. Always ask: "Did the figure turn, or did it flip?"

Trap 3 — Rotational Symmetry

Some figures look identical after certain rotations. A square looks the same after 90°, 180°, 270°, and 360°. If a figure has rotational symmetry, the smallest non-trivial rotation that maps it onto itself is its order of symmetry — and any multiple of that order is invisible. Do not be fooled into thinking no rotation occurred.

Speed Strategy

Under PAF time pressure (roughly 30–40 seconds per non-verbal item), you cannot afford to redraw the figure. Train yourself to:

  • Label the reference feature mentally in words ("the black dot is at the top-left corner").
  • Say the start and end clock positions silently ("top-left to bottom-right = 180°").
  • Eliminate any answer choice whose reference feature is in the wrong clock position before considering anything else.

Elimination by reference feature alone will usually remove two of the four options. The remaining two will differ in either direction (CW vs CCW) or in a secondary feature — exactly the traps above.

Practice Drills

  1. Take any asymmetric letter (F, R, L, P). Rotate it 90° CW, 180°, 270° CW in your head and sketch the result. Check by drawing.
  2. Look at a clock. Without rotating your head, predict where the minute hand will be after 90°, 180°, 270° CW.
  3. Use a compass: face north, then turn 90° CW (east), 180° (south), 270° CW (west). This physical drill builds the body sense that pilots rely on for attitude awareness.
