The Shape of the Test

The ParaPro Assessment (test code 1755), administered by Educational Testing Service (ETS), contains 90 selected-response questions that you answer in 150 minutes (two and a half hours). Selected-response simply means multiple-choice: every question gives you a small set of answer options and you choose the best one. There is no essay, no spoken section, and no constructed response — your job is to recognize the strongest answer, not to produce one from scratch.

The 90 questions are split evenly across three areas: Reading, Mathematics, and Writing, roughly 30 questions each. Because the areas are equally weighted, a candidate who is strong in two areas but weak in the third cannot coast — every area pulls the same weight on your scaled score. Mixing these two styles is what makes the ParaPro different from a generic basic-skills test. A question may look like a reading question but actually ask which teaching move is most appropriate. Train yourself to read the stem twice and decide: Is this asking me to answer, or to coach?

Reading the Question Before the Answers

Because every ParaPro item is multiple-choice, the most reliable scoring strategy is disciplined distractor elimination. ETS writes wrong answers (distractors) that are deliberately tempting — they reflect the most common student misconceptions. Your edge is to spot and discard them.

A Repeatable Five-Step Routine

  1. Read the full stem first, before glancing at the options. Decide whether it is a knowledge question or an application question.
  2. Underline qualifier words in your mind: NOT, EXCEPT, BEST, MOST, LEAST, FIRST. These flip or rank the answer and cause more avoidable misses than any content gap.
  3. Predict an answer before reading the options when you can — especially in Reading and Writing. If your prediction matches an option, that option is usually right.
  4. Eliminate two distractors fast. On most ParaPro items you can rule out two options in seconds (an off-topic choice, an absolute statement, a choice that embarrasses or singles out a student).
  5. Choose between what remains and, if still unsure, make your best guess, flag, and move on.

Why You Answer Every Question

The ParaPro has no penalty for guessing — your score is based on the number of correct answers, with nothing subtracted for wrong ones. That single fact dictates a rule: never leave a question blank. If you run low on time, spend the final minute filling every empty answer with your best guess. On a four-option question a blind guess is right about 25% of the time; an educated guess after eliminating two distractors is right about 50% of the time.

Worked example — eliminating distractors on an application item: A question reads, "A student keeps confusing the main idea with a supporting detail. Which approach would BEST help?" Options: (A) Tell the student to reread the whole passage silently. (B) Have the student state in one sentence what the whole passage is mostly about, then check that the other sentences support it. (C) Give the student the answer so they can move on. (D) Ask the student to memorize the first sentence as the main idea. Eliminate (C) immediately — never just give the answer. Eliminate (D) — the main idea is not always the first sentence. (A) is vague and does not target the confusion. (B) directly distinguishes main idea from detail, so (B) is the best support. This is the classic ParaPro pattern: the right application answer scaffolds the thinking, never shortcuts it.

Pacing Across 150 Minutes

Ninety questions in 150 minutes is about 100 seconds (1 minute 40 seconds) per question on average. That is generous for most items and tight for a few. Because the areas are equal in size, a simple plan is to budget roughly 50 minutes per area and keep a soft checkpoint every 15 questions.

The test is not adaptive and lets you move freely, so flagging works in your favor: skip a hard math item, clear three easy writing items, and circle back with momentum. The goal is never to let one stubborn question eat the time of five answerable ones.

  • Over-reading passages. In Reading, skim for the main idea, then return to the text for evidence on each question rather than memorizing details up front.
  • Re-deriving known facts in Math. Recall that 3/4 = 0.75 = 75% instead of recomputing it mid-test.
