Main Idea

The central point or most important concept the author wants to convey. Often found in the first or last paragraph. Supporting details explain or prove the main idea. Ask: 'What is this passage mostly about?'

Context Clues

Words or phrases surrounding an unknown word that help determine its meaning. Types include definition clues, synonym/antonym clues, example clues, and inference clues. Essential strategy for vocabulary development.

Author's Purpose

The reason an author writes a text. Three main purposes: to inform (present facts), to persuade (convince reader), or to entertain (amuse or engage). Identified through tone, word choice, and content.

Inference

A logical conclusion drawn from evidence in the text combined with prior knowledge. Not directly stated but implied. Readers must 'read between the lines.' Supported by textual evidence.

Text Structure

How information is organized in a passage. Common structures: chronological/sequence, cause and effect, compare and contrast, problem and solution, description. Signal words help identify structure.

Fact vs Opinion

Facts can be proven true or false with evidence. Opinions express beliefs, feelings, or judgments that cannot be proven. Key skill for evaluating sources and arguments. Signal words: I believe, should, best.

Summarizing

Condensing a text to its main points in your own words. Include only essential information: main idea and key supporting details. Omit minor details and examples. Shorter than original text.

Phonemic Awareness

The ability to hear, identify, and manipulate individual sounds (phonemes) in spoken words. Foundation for reading and spelling. Skills include blending, segmenting, and manipulating sounds. Taught before phonics.

Fluency

The ability to read with speed, accuracy, and proper expression. Connects decoding and comprehension. Developed through repeated reading and modeling. Measured in words correct per minute (WCPM).

Reading Comprehension Strategies

Techniques to improve understanding: predicting, questioning, visualizing, making connections, determining importance, synthesizing. Active readers use multiple strategies before, during, and after reading.

Place Value

The value of a digit based on its position in a number. Each place is 10 times the value of the place to its right. Understanding place value is essential for all arithmetic operations and number sense.

Fractions

Numbers representing parts of a whole. Numerator (top) shows parts taken; denominator (bottom) shows total equal parts. Equivalent fractions have same value. Proper fractions less than 1; improper greater than or equal to 1.

Decimal Operations

Addition/subtraction: align decimal points. Multiplication: multiply as whole numbers, count total decimal places. Division: move decimal to make divisor whole, move same places in dividend.

Percentages

A ratio out of 100. To convert: decimal to percent multiply by 100, percent to decimal divide by 100. To find percent of number: convert percent to decimal and multiply. Common in real-world applications.

Order of Operations

PEMDAS: Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication and Division (left to right), Addition and Subtraction (left to right). Ensures everyone gets the same answer. Critical for evaluating expressions correctly.

Algebraic Expressions

Mathematical phrases containing numbers, variables, and operations. Variable represents an unknown value. Like terms have same variable parts. Simplify by combining like terms and applying properties.

Solving Linear Equations

Find the value of the variable that makes the equation true. Use inverse operations to isolate the variable. Whatever you do to one side, do to the other. Check solution by substituting back.

Geometry: Area Formulas

Rectangle: length × width. Triangle: ½ × base × height. Circle: π × radius². Parallelogram: base × height. Trapezoid: ½ × (base₁ + base₂) × height. Area measured in square units.

Geometry: Perimeter and Circumference

Perimeter: distance around a polygon (sum of all sides). Rectangle: 2(length + width). Circumference: distance around a circle = 2πr or πd. Measured in linear units.

Data Interpretation

Reading and analyzing information from graphs, tables, and charts. Types include bar graphs, line graphs, pie charts, pictographs. Identify trends, compare values, and draw conclusions from displayed data.

Mean, Median, Mode

Mean: average (sum divided by count). Median: middle value when ordered (or average of two middle values). Mode: most frequent value. Each measures central tendency differently; choose based on data and purpose.

Ratios and Proportions

Ratio compares two quantities (a:b or a/b). Proportion states two ratios are equal. Cross-multiply to solve: a/b = c/d means ad = bc. Used in scaling, recipes, maps, and similar figures.

Pronouns must agree with their antecedents in number, gender, and person. Antecedent is the noun the pronoun replaces. Common errors involve indefinite pronouns like 'everyone' (singular) and collective nouns.

Comma Usage

Use commas: in series, after introductory elements, with coordinating conjunctions joining clauses, around non-essential information, with dates and addresses. Avoid comma splices (joining independent clauses with only a comma).

Sentence Fragments

Incomplete sentences lacking a subject, verb, or complete thought. Often dependent clauses standing alone. Fix by adding missing elements or connecting to an independent clause. Common in student writing.

Run-On Sentences

Two or more independent clauses improperly joined. Types: fused (no punctuation) and comma splice. Fix with: period, semicolon, comma plus coordinating conjunction, or subordinating one clause.

Paragraph Structure

Effective paragraphs contain: topic sentence (main idea), supporting sentences (details, examples, evidence), and concluding sentence. Unity means all sentences relate to one main idea. Coherence through transitions.

Thesis Statement

A sentence stating the main argument or point of an essay. Usually in the introduction. Should be specific, arguable, and guide the essay's organization. Each body paragraph supports the thesis.

Capitalization Rules

Capitalize: first word of sentence, proper nouns (names of specific people, places, things), titles before names, major words in titles. Do not capitalize common nouns or seasons.

Apostrophe Usage

Possessives: singular add 's, plural ending in s add only '. Contractions: apostrophe replaces omitted letters. Common errors: it's (contraction) vs. its (possessive), confusing plurals with possessives.

Parallel Structure

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the passing score for the ParaPro Assessment?

The ParaPro passing score varies by state and district, typically ranging from 455 to 465 on a 420-480 scale. ETS does not set a universal passing score—each state or school district establishes its own requirement. For example, Minnesota requires 455, while many Florida districts require 460. Check your specific state's requirements on the ETS website before testing.

Can I use a calculator on the ParaPro exam?

No, calculators are NOT allowed on the ParaPro Assessment. The 30 mathematics questions are designed to be solved without a calculator and test skills at approximately a high school level. Practice mental math, estimation, and pencil-and-paper calculations during your preparation. The math questions cover basic arithmetic, algebra, and geometry—no advanced calculations requiring a calculator.

How is the ParaPro exam structured?

The ParaPro Assessment contains 90 multiple-choice questions divided equally into three sections: 30 Reading questions, 30 Mathematics questions, and 30 Writing questions. You have 2.5 hours (150 minutes) to complete all questions. About two-thirds of questions test basic skills, while one-third apply those skills to classroom instruction scenarios.

How soon can I retake the ParaPro if I don't pass?

As of June 2024, ETS updated the ParaPro retake policy: you can retake the test immediately after your first attempt. If you need a third attempt, you must wait 7 days. Is the ParaPro Assessment difficult?

However, difficulty depends on your experience—if you haven't used grammar rules or geometry in years, focused study is important. Most test-takers who prepare for 2-4 weeks pass successfully.

Do I need a college degree to take the ParaPro?

No college degree is required to take the ParaPro Assessment. Under federal ESSA/NCLB requirements, paraprofessionals can qualify through one of three paths: an associate's degree, two years of college coursework, or passing the ParaPro Assessment. The ParaPro option is specifically designed for those without college credentials who want to demonstrate academic competency.
