Two Dimensions in Every Content Area

The defining feature of the ParaPro — the thing that separates it from a generic basic-skills test — is that every content area is tested along two dimensions at once:

  1. Knowledge and skills. Can you perform the task? Can you find the main idea of a passage, divide two fractions, or spot a sentence fragment?
  2. Application of skills to classroom instruction. Can you take that same skill and use it to help a teacher and assist a student? Which strategy would you use to guide a struggling reader to the main idea, what manipulative would make fraction division concrete, or how would you coach a student to fix a run-on sentence?

ETS states the split plainly: in each subject area, approximately two-thirds of the questions focus on basic skills and knowledge, and approximately one-third focus on applying those skills and knowledge in a classroom context. That ratio holds for Reading, for Mathematics, and for Writing. Because each area has about 30 questions, the practical breakdown is roughly 20 skills questions and 10 application questions per area — about 60 skills questions and 30 application questions across the whole exam.

The equal weighting matters for planning: there is no "main" section to prioritize. A candidate who is strong in reading and writing but weak in math cannot coast — math is exactly one-third of the score. Likewise, you cannot pass on raw academic ability alone if you ignore the application questions, because nearly one in three questions rewards classroom thinking rather than pure content knowledge.

Why the Application Dimension Trips People Up

Application questions are where well-prepared test-takers most often lose points, for a simple reason: more than one answer choice is usually "correct" academically. The question is not "what is the right answer to the math problem?" but "what is the best way to help the student?"

The exam rewards answers that reflect good classroom support — breaking a task into steps (scaffolding), modeling the process, checking for understanding, building on what the student already knows, and using concrete tools. It penalizes choices that simply give the student the answer, single out or embarrass a child, or skip ahead without checking comprehension.

Skills vs. Application — Side by Side

The quickest way to internalize the two dimensions is to look at the same topic asked two ways. The left column is a skills question (do you know it?); the right column is an application question (how would you help a student with it?).

What Each Area Covers

Each content area draws its skills questions from a defined set of topics. You will study these in depth in later chapters; here is the map so you can see how the 90 questions are distributed by subject.

Reading (≈30 questions) — comprehension and analysis of written text:

  • Main ideas and supporting details
  • Vocabulary in context and word parts (prefixes, suffixes, roots)

A Worked Application Example

Example — spotting the application answer: A second-grader reads a short paragraph aloud accurately but, when asked what it was "mostly about," only repeats a single detail from the last sentence. An application question might ask what the paraprofessional should do next. The strongest answer is not "tell the student the main idea" and not "have the student reread silently and move on." It is something like "ask the student to summarize the paragraph in one sentence using their own words, then guide them to test whether each detail fits that sentence." That choice scaffolds the skill, checks understanding, and keeps the student doing the thinking — the hallmarks of a correct ParaPro application answer.
