Texture: coarse, medium, fine

Texture is the diameter of an individual hair, not how thick the ponytail looks.

  • Coarse — largest diameter; often more resistant to processing because there is more cortex to penetrate, but coarse hair can still be dry and damaged. Do not assume “coarse” means “indestructible.”
  • Medium — most common; usually processes within expected color and perm timings when porosity is average.
  • Fine — smallest diameter; less cortex, so it can overprocess faster, look limp, and break if you treat it like coarse resistant hair. Fine hair may still have high density (many fine hairs per square inch) and look full — that is why texture and density are separate notes on the client card.

How you check: isolate a single dry strand, roll it between fingers, compare to a known medium strand. On the exam, fine = smaller diameter, not “oily,” and coarse = larger diameter, not “curly.” Wave pattern is a different observation (straight, wavy, curly, coily).


Porosity: low, average, high

Porosity is the hair’s ability to absorb moisture (and, by extension, color, lightener, and waving lotion). It is mostly a cuticle story.

  • Low (resistant) porosity — compact, overlapping cuticle. Water beads; chemicals sit on the surface. You may need heat, longer processing, or a more alkaline opening step so the cuticle lifts enough to let the product in. Overdoing alkali on a client who is actually average porosity is how you create the next high-porosity problem.
  • Average porosity — cuticle slightly raised, product enters in a predictable window. Formulas behave like the manufacturer’s timing chart.
  • High porosity — cuticle is lifted, cracked, or missing from chemical, mechanical, or environmental damage. Hair drinks too fast, fades fast, and the cortex is exposed. Ends often grab darker or brassier while new growth stays resistant.

Alkaline versus acid, conceptually:

  • Alkaline solutions (many perms, relaxers, high-lift color, lightener in process) swell the hair and raise the cuticle so chemicals can enter the cortex.
  • Acid solutions and many acidifying rinses help contract and close the cuticle, which is why a pH-balancing finish can improve shine and slow wash-out — it does not rebuild a missing cuticle.

Elasticity

Elasticity is the hair’s ability to stretch and return without breaking. It reports cortex integrity (keratin and bonds), not just surface oil.

Textbook teaching often states that healthy wet hair can stretch about 40–50 percent of its length and return, and dry hair about 15–20 percent. Use those as training ranges, not Board-published Oklahoma percentages.

Low elasticity: hair stretches and stays stretched, or snaps. That hair is a poor candidate for a virgin relaxer, a high-volume lightener, or a tight set. Record it. A wet-stretch on a small section during consultation is cheaper than a full-head breakage complaint.


Density

Density is the number of hairs per square inch — thin, medium, or thick as a head of hair, not as a strand. A client can have fine texture + high density (silky but lots of it) or coarse texture + low density (wiry but see-through). Chemical amount, subsection size, and whether a bob will look bulky all depend on density. Do not upcharge “thickening” products as a cure for low density caused by androgenetic miniaturization without an honest analysis.


Growth pattern and scalp condition

Growth pattern is the direction hair emerges:

  • Hairline — recession, widows peak, or a dense low line changes bang design and chemical placement so you do not stripe the forehead skin.
  • Whorl — circular growth, often at the crown. Cutting too short over a strong whorl creates a spike. Chemical placement on a whorl still follows porosity, but the finish must respect the swirl.
  • Cowlick — a tuft that stands or grows opposite the desired style. Forcing it with tension and heat every week is a traction and breakage plan.

Scalp condition is its own line on the card: dry, oily, flaky, tight, flexible, abrasions, sores, inflammation. A beautiful porosity story does not authorize you to apply relaxer on an inflamed scalp (see 6.2 and OAC 175:10-7-20). Check the scalp before you mix.


Putting the analysis together

Walk a Midwest City color correction:

  1. Texture medium-fine; density high at the nape, low at the part.
  2. New growth low porosity; previously lightened ends high porosity.
  3. Elasticity good at the root, poor at the porous ends.
  4. Crown whorl; scalp intact, no flakes that look like tinea or nits.

Service implication: filler on the porous ends to equalize porosity, milder formula or lower volume on those ends, strand test, and a cut that respects the whorl. That is analysis. Skipping it and using one formula from scalp to porous white-blonde ends is how you manufacture a complaint.

Exam traps:

  • Mixing up texture (diameter) and density (count).
  • Treating low porosity with more bleach “to force it,” creating high porosity.
  • Forgetting why high porosity needs filler: to equalize porosity.
  • Calling a cowlick a disease.
  • Claiming Oklahoma publishes official porosity percentages. It does not; you use textbook methods and manufacturer directions, then you still follow sanitation rules before any product touches the head.
