10.1 Color Theory, the Law of Color & Natural Pigment

The Law of Color

The law of color is the mixing rule used throughout professional haircoloring. Three primary hues cannot be mixed from other hues. Every other teaching hue on the salon wheel is built from those three.

  • Tertiary colors: mix a primary with a neighboring secondary

Secondaries (equal-parts teaching mixes)

Tertiaries (primary + neighboring secondary)

The six tertiary names you should recognize on a stem are red-orange, yellow-orange, yellow-green, blue-green, blue-violet, and red-violet. You are not scoring an art exam. You are scoring whether you can hear "too orange" or "too yellow" and move toward the complementary cancel, not toward more of the same warmth.

Complementary colors neutralize

Complementary hues sit opposite each other on the wheel. Mixed in the hair, they mute intensity toward brown, beige, or ash rather than creating a third bright fashion shade. That is the entire logic of brassy-correction and most toners.

Memorize the three exam pairs as sentences you can say under time pressure:

  1. Blue cancels orange.
  2. Violet cancels yellow.
  3. Green cancels red (and red cancels green).

Warm client language maps onto the warm side of the wheel: gold, copper, auburn, honey. Cool client language maps onto ash, beige, platinum, smoky. Neutral is the teaching midpoint that does not strongly pull warm or cool. A "natural brown" request is usually a level plus a neutral or slightly warm tone, not an ash-violet fashion shade.


The Level System: 1 Through 10

Level answers "how light or dark?" Tone answers "what character sits inside that depth?" Most professional teaching charts use level 1 = black through level 10 = lightest blonde.

Brand decimals (7.1, 8N, 9V) are manufacturer codes for tone inside a level. The written exam still wants you to separate depth from tone. Going from a natural 5 to a target 8 is three levels of lift, regardless of whether the target is 8 gold or 8 ash. The gold versus ash decision is neutralization of the yellow-orange that appears at 8, not a different amount of lift.


Natural Pigment: Eumelanin and Pheomelanin

Natural hair color is melanin packed in the cortex, seen through the cuticle. Two pigment types matter on the exam:

  • Eumelanin is brown-to-black. It is the bulk of depth in dark brunette and black hair. It lightens along a more predictable brown → red → orange → yellow path when enough cuticle opening and oxidation occur.
  • Pheomelanin is red-to-yellow. It is concentrated in natural reds, strawberries, and many warm blondes. It is more resistant to lightening than eumelanin. That is why a natural copper level 6 can still look brassy after a formula that easily moved a cool brunette of the same starting level.

Most heads are a mix. A "dark brown with a red cast" is eumelanin depth plus visible pheomelanin. Gray or white hair has little or no melanin in those fibers, so it has no contributing warmth to cancel — and also no pigment to "lift." Gray coverage is a deposit and lasting problem, not a contributing-pigment problem. Mixing a natural/neutral series into a fashion shade is how many professional systems keep gray from looking translucent or too vivid; that mixing is covered in Section 10.2.

Porosity changes how pigment behaves even when melanin is the same. A previously lightened, high-porosity midshaft drinks toner fast and can go ashy or muddy while new growth still looks brassy. That is not a different law of color. It is the same contributing pigment meeting uneven porosity, which is why strand tests and fillers (Section 10.4) exist.


Contributing Pigment at Each Lift Stage

Contributing pigment (also called underlying pigment or remaining pigment) is the warmth that becomes visible as natural melanin is oxidized and reduced. You do not "remove orange from the bottle." You reveal orange when you take brown hair through the orange stage, then you either leave it (warm result) or neutralize it (ash/beige result).

Use the level table as a prediction sheet:

  • Lifting a natural 5 toward 7 means you should expect orange. If the client wants a cool 7, the formula needs a blue component strong enough to cancel that orange, or you pre-lighten and tone in two processes.
  • Lifting toward 8 leaves yellow-orange; blue-violet is the usual cancel direction.
  • Lifting toward 9–10 leaves yellow to pale yellow; violet toners are the classic cancel. Blue-only toners on pale yellow can read gray-green or dull rather than pearl.

High-lift single-process color can only travel so far from a dark natural level. If the math says four or more levels of lift into pale blonde, theory teaching treats that as a pre-lighten then toner problem (Section 10.3), not a "stronger ash permanent on the scalp" problem. Ash pigment does not replace missing lift. It only cancels whatever warmth is actually present.

Exam traps in this section

  • Confusing level (depth) with tone (warm/cool).
  • Neutralizing orange with violet (violet is for yellow; orange wants blue).
  • Assuming pheomelanin-rich hair will lift like eumelanin-rich hair at the same level.
  • Treating gray as if it had contributing orange to cancel.
  • Inventing a Board-mandated number of minutes for any manufacturer; Oklahoma does not publish processing times as sanitation rules. Timing follows the product label (see 10.2 and 10.4 for OAC mixing rules).
