Pass the Notary Exam
Pass the 30-question closed-book exam at 80% (24/30), administered by your authorized provider after the education course. Retakes are allowed after a 30-day wait.
Submit Application & Get Supplies
Apply online via Ohio SOS portal ($15 fee), upload documents, receive commission via email, purchase seal and supplies.
Can You Take the Ohio Notary Exam?
Check if you meet the basic eligibility requirements
- •Must be Ohio resident OR non-resident attorney licensed in Ohio with principal place of business in OH
- •No disqualifying offenses (crimes of moral turpitude, fraud/theft violations)
- •Licensed Ohio attorneys are exempt from BOTH the 3-hour course and the exam (they still file with the SOS and pay the $15 fee)
- •30-day waiting period before retaking the exam after a failure
- •Remote Online Notarization (RON) is a registered SOS add-on requiring credential analysis, identity proofing, and an audio-visual recording
