Get BCI Background Check
Complete the BCI criminal records check with an authorized BCI agent (reason code 147.022); the report must be issued within 6 months of your application.

Take the required notary education course from an Ohio SOS-authorized provider ($130 fee includes exam).
Pass the Notary Exam
Pass the test given by your authorized provider after the education course. A failed test may be retaken after 30 days; a second failure means a new application and fee.
Submit Application & Get Supplies
Apply online via the Ohio SOS portal ($15 fee) and upload your signature sample, BCI report, and education/testing certificate. After approval, take the oath of office before a notary or other authorized officer, then purchase your seal and supplies.
Can You Take the Ohio Notary Exam?
Check if you meet the basic eligibility requirements
- •Must be Ohio resident OR non-resident attorney licensed in Ohio with principal place of business in OH
- •No disqualifying offense under R.C. 9.79 and no previously revoked Ohio notary commission
- •Licensed Ohio attorneys skip the BCI report and the exam but must complete the 3-hour education course ($75 provider fee) and pay the $15 SOS fee
- •A failed test may be retaken no sooner than 30 days later (and within 6 months of the BCI report); a second failure means a new application and fee
- •Remote Online Notarization (RON) requires separate SOS authorization with 2-hour education and a test; RON platforms must provide credential analysis, identity proofing, and an audio-visual recording
