1. These Are Picture Items, Not Number Items

Get this straight before you spend study time in the wrong place. NYSP pattern-recognition items are figural. You are shown a grid of tiles containing shapes, one tile is replaced by a question mark, and you choose the shape that belongs there.

Number series such as 3, 6, 11, 18, letter-position puzzles where A equals 1 and B equals 2, and arithmetic progressions are not on this examination. Mathematical reasoning is not among the twelve narrow abilities measured. Preparation material that drills numeric sequences for a "New York police exam" is usually aimed at the New York City Police Department's test, which has a different blueprint. Practicing it will not hurt your general reasoning, but it will not touch these five items.
