1.3 Test-Center Rules, Identification & Exam-Day Protocol

More candidates lose a testing cycle to an expired driver's license than to any single cognitive ability. The admission rules at Pearson VUE are administered literally, with no discretion at the counter. This section is the checklist; treat it as part of your preparation rather than as fine print.

1. Identification: The Rule That Turns Candidates Away

You must present two forms of current, unexpired, signature-bearing identification. One of them must be government-issued and photo-bearing. Identification must be in English.

Acceptable primary ID (photo and signature, unexpired):

• Government-issued driver's license
• U.S. Department of State driver's license
• U.S. learner's permit — plastic card only, with photo and signature
• National, state or country ID card
• Passport or passport card
• Military ID, including military ID for spouses and dependents
• Alien Registration Card (green card, permanent resident visa)

The secondary ID must carry a signature, and the name on it must match both the primary ID and the name in Pearson VUE's system.

Three details cause most of the failures at the door:

1. Exact name matching, including suffixes. The name on both IDs must match the examination registration exactly — "Jr." and "III" included. If your Pearson VUE account name does not match your NYSP application, contact the State Police to correct it before test day.
2. No grace periods. Pearson VUE does not recognize state renewal grace periods. If your license expired yesterday and your state allows thirty days to renew, the ID is expired for admission purposes.
3. Hidden signatures. If a card's signature is embedded in a microchip, or is illegible, it does not count — bring another primary-list ID with a visible signature.

If you arrive without proper identification you will be denied admission and recorded as absent.

At check-in, the test center also collects additional admissions data, including a photograph and an electronic signature.

2. Timing at the Test Center

Build slack into the trip. Traffic, parking, and locating an unfamiliar office suite are foreseeable, and the lateness rule does not bend for any of them. If you are unsure where the test center is, drive the route beforehand.

3. What You May Not Bring Into the Room

Prohibited in the testing room:

• Cellular phones, pagers, tablets, smart watches, and any other electronic or communication device
• Books, notes, papers, study materials, and reference material of any kind — including the official study guide and any sample test materials
• Calculators
• Briefcases and large bags

Most testing locations provide a locker for personal belongings. Anything you carry in is collected and returned when you finish. Pearson VUE is not responsible for lost or misplaced items, so leave valuables at home.

Also prohibited during the examination: eating, drinking, and smoking. Guests, visitors, children and pets are not allowed at test sites — do not plan to have someone wait for you inside.

4. Test Security and the Code of Conduct

The examination content belongs to IOS, and both the Division and Pearson VUE enforce security aggressively. By testing, you agree to maintain the confidentiality of the content you see.

Prohibited conduct includes:

• Removing test material from the test site
• Reproducing, reconstructing, or paraphrasing test content orally or in writing
• Discussing test content with anyone, during or after the process — remember that other candidates test on other days, and you may unknowingly pass information to someone who has not yet sat
• Using a cell phone or communication device at any point during the test
• Viewing another candidate's answers, talking with other test takers, or sharing answers

The consequences are unusually severe for an entry-level examination. Candidates found to have violated test security may be disqualified from their examination and may also be disqualified from taking any civil service examination for five years. Some violations can additionally result in disciplinary action, fine, or imprisonment. Failure to follow written and oral instructions is itself grounds for disqualification.

Disturbances and misconduct are reported to the NYSP, which alone decides your application status. Giving or receiving help means immediate removal from the room and an unscored result.

5. Accommodations

Pearson VUE complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act as amended. Accommodations — for example a separate testing room or extra testing time — are individualized, considered case by case, and approved by the NYSP, not by the test center.

To request accommodations:

1. Send the request and supporting documentation to the State Police recruitment address published for accommodation requests.
2. Include documentation from the professional who diagnosed the condition, with the credentials qualifying them to make the diagnosis, and an explanation of how the condition is expected to affect testing under standard conditions.
3. Additional scheduling questions can go to Pearson VUE's ADA coordinator.

Start this early. Accommodation approval runs through the Division and cannot be arranged at the counter on test day. Note also that accommodations exist to provide full access to the test; they are not a guarantee of improved performance or of completing the test.

6. Finishing the Examination

When you complete the examination you receive a printed receipt showing the status "Examination Taken." That receipt confirms delivery only — it is not a score report. At the end of the written examination testing period, the State Police review all results and then provide candidates with information about their status. Do not expect a score at the test center.

7. Exam-Day Checklist

• Two unexpired signature IDs packed, one government-issued with a photo, names matching registration exactly
• Route driven or mapped; departure time set to arrive 30 minutes early
• Phone, smart watch and all study material left in the car or the locker
• Full night's sleep and breakfast — the cognitive section is 100 minutes of sustained attention
• Dressed in layers for an unpredictable room temperature
• Study guide and sample materials left at home — bringing them to the site is expressly prohibited
