6.2 Relative Position, Turn Direction & Taking the Map's Perspective

Section 6.1 covered the mechanics of tracing a route. This section covers the harder half of spatial orientation: perspective. The publisher's diagnosis of where candidates lose these items is unusually direct.

"The most common mistakes on spatial orientation questions have to do with improperly orienting yourself. First, you must understand where north, south, east and west are based on the map you are viewing. You also need to be sure that you consider the perspective of an individual who is 'inside' the map. This will allow you to make correct judgments about whether a turn is left or right, east or west, or north or south."

Two distinct failures are named there, and they need different fixes.


1. Failure One: Not Fixing the Cardinal Directions First

The publisher's closing advice for the ability is "remember to carefully review the map before reading the questions as this will help you better relate to the question."

Reviewing first means spending fifteen seconds establishing:

  • Where north is, per the compass rose.
  • Which roads run north–south and which run east–west.
  • Whether the road-naming convention follows that split — for example, numbered "Streets" running one way and named "Avenues" the other.

With that fixed, every instruction in the stem converts instantly. Without it, you re-derive direction on every leg, which is both slow and where sign errors creep in.


2. Failure Two: Judging Left and Right From Your Own Seat

The route is given from the perspective of a driver moving through the map. Your instinct is to judge left and right from where you are sitting, looking down at the page. Those agree only when the driver is heading north — which is the case in roughly a quarter of legs.

The line that catches almost everyone is the third one. Heading south, a right turn goes west — it moves you left across the page. If a route sends you south and then right, and you drift right on the page, you are now tracing a completely different route and every subsequent leg compounds the error.

Two reliable defences:

  1. Rotate the map. Physically turning the page, or mentally rotating it, so that your direction of travel points "up" restores the intuitive correspondence: your right hand is the driver's right. This is entirely legitimate and, for most people, faster than reasoning about a reversal.
  2. Work in cardinal directions only. Convert every left or right into north, south, east or west the moment you read it, write the cardinal down, and trace using that. Cardinal directions are absolute on the page and cannot be mixed up by perspective.

Most exam route stems are already written in cardinal terms — "south on High Avenue, west on 10th Avenue" — which removes the problem entirely. It reappears in stems that mix the two, such as "travel north on Randolph Avenue, then turn right at the second intersection."


3. Relative-Position Questions

A second stem family asks where one location sits relative to another: "Which of the following is directly west of the courthouse?" or "The school is located in which direction from your current position?"

The method has three steps:

  1. Identify the reference point — the place the question measures from. In "west of the courthouse," the reference is the courthouse. Getting this backwards inverts every answer, and it is easy to do when the sentence puts the other place first.
  2. Locate both points on the map and mark them.
  3. Read the direction from reference to target using the compass, not using your impression of the page.

Two vocabulary points recur:

  • "Directly" north/south/east/west means aligned along that axis — same street line, not merely in that general direction. A location that is north and considerably east is not directly north.
  • "Between" requires the target to lie on the segment joining two named points, not merely somewhere in the vicinity of both.

4. Where Am I Facing Now?

Some items end by asking your heading rather than your position. Track it as you trace: at every turn, update a single note that reads N, S, E or W. When the last leg is drawn, that note is your answer.

The turn arithmetic is simple once expressed in cardinal terms:

  • From north: right gives east, right again gives south, right again gives west, right again returns to north.
  • A U-turn reverses your heading: north becomes south, east becomes west.
  • "Bear right" or a diagonal street shifts you between cardinal directions — for example, from north toward northeast. Exam maps are usually rectangular grids, but a diagonal road is a common wrinkle and should be traced on the map rather than reasoned about abstractly.

5. A Worked Sequence

Suppose a stem reads: You are heading west on Cedar Avenue. You turn left onto Fourth Street, travel two blocks, turn left onto Birch Avenue, then turn right onto Sixth Street and stop at the first intersection.

Read off the table: you finish travelling south on Sixth Street. Notice leg 4 — heading east, a right turn goes south, moving you down the page. A candidate judging from his own seat would have drifted right across the page and ended somewhere else entirely.

Building the four-row table takes about twenty seconds and eliminates the failure mode the publisher identifies as most common. On a five-item block, that is a good trade.


6. Practice

Extend the printed-map drill from section 6.1:

  • Convert as you go. Write routes in mixed terms — "head east on Main, turn right, turn right again" — and then convert each turn to a cardinal direction before tracing. Check your conversions against the table above.
  • Answer relative-position questions about your own city. Pick two landmarks and state, without looking, which direction the second lies from the first. Then check. This trains the reference-point discipline that step 1 above requires.
  • Practise the rotation. Deliberately trace a few routes that head south for most of their length, rotating the page so south points up. Notice how much easier the turns become, and get comfortable doing it under time pressure.
