About the Nevada L&H Exam

The Nevada Life and Health (Accident & Health) licensing examinations are developed and administered by Pearson VUE on behalf of the Nevada Division of Insurance (DOI). Every exam is split into two parts — a General Knowledge section covering nationally uniform product and contract concepts, and a Nevada State Specific section covering the Nevada Revised Statutes (NRS) Title 57 and the Nevada Administrative Code (NAC). You receive a single pass/fail result; you do not have to pass each section separately.

Nevada offers separate Life and Accident & Health exams as well as combined Series 05 — NV Life and Health. This guide targets Series 05, whose current outline combines both general-knowledge sections with Nevada-specific law.

Exam Structure (verified against the Pearson VUE candidate handbook)

The table below reflects the official October 2024 Nevada Insurance Candidate Handbook and content outlines. Note the scaled passing score of 70 — a frequent point of confusion because Pearson reports scores on a 0–100 scale where 70 is the cut, not a raw percentage.

Note: Pretest questions are unscored items mixed invisibly among the scored questions; Nevada collects statistics on them for future exams. They do not affect your score, so answer every question.

Score reporting

Nevada uses a scaled cut score of 70 for all producer exams under NAC 683A.270. A raw score (number correct) is converted to a 0–100 scaled score; only Bail-line exams use a percent-correct (67%) standard. A reported score below 70 tells you how close you came — it is not a literal percentage.

Pre-Licensing Education — NOT Required in Nevada

Unlike many states, Nevada does not mandate pre-licensing education for resident producer applicants. You may schedule and sit the exam after self-study. Optional prep courses exist and are strongly recommended because they raise pass rates, and any approved Nevada course adds a small statutory surcharge (about $4 per course to the Commission on Postsecondary Education plus $5 to the Student Indemnification Fund), but no minimum hour count is legally required.

Exam Tip: A common trap question asserts Nevada requires "20 hours per line" or "40 hours combined." That is false for Nevada. Pre-licensing education is optional; the binding requirements are fingerprinting, the exam, and the application.

Fees You Will Pay

Important: Exam fees were updated to $37 single-line / $47 combo in the current handbook. Older study materials listing $39/$49 are out of date.

Application Process (Step by Step)

As of recent DOI process changes, the correct sequence matters: you generally apply first, then fingerprint with a confirmation number.

1. Self-study and pass the exam. Register at Pearson VUE, pay $37 (single) or $47 (combo), and sit combined Series 05 at a listed test center; the current Series 05 listing does not show OnVUE delivery. Results print immediately.
2. Apply for the license electronically through Sircon or NIPR, paying the $190 state filing ($185 license fee + $5 technology fee) plus any transaction fees. You must apply within one year of passing.
3. Complete authorized fingerprinting after the application is submitted. Bring the Fingerprint Authorization Form with your application confirmation/transaction ID to an approved vendor. Nevada DPS delivers the background report to the DOI within about three business days.
4. DOI review and issuance. Once the background check clears and materials are approved, the Division issues your license.
