What resistance is

Pesticide resistance is a heritable decline in susceptibility. Individuals that survive a labeled use pass that trait on. Over generations the population shifts. It is not:

  • Poor coverage, a clogged nozzle, or rain-washoff (those are application failures).
  • Treating the wrong life stage (a pupa, a dormant weed, a pathogen with no infection period).
  • Treating the wrong species (nutsedge with a crabgrass-only herbicide).
  • Tolerance in the everyday sense of a plant that was never very sensitive.
  • Behavioral avoidance alone, though bait aversion in German cockroaches is a related field failure you still manage by changing matrices and sanitation, not by pouring more of the same bait.

Selection pressure goes up when you: use the same mode of action repeatedly; treat every generation; use a rate below the labeled rate that kills susceptibles but leaves intermediates; treat below threshold so you dose the population without a real pest-control need; or rely on chemistry while cultural harborage stays in place.

Labeled rates exist for efficacy and resistance. Cutting the rate to “stretch the jug” is unlabeled and a selection experiment. Effectiveness factors that are not resistance

Before you declare a “resistant population,” walk 40 CFR 171.103(c)(5)(v)’s other half—factors that influence effectiveness:

  • Identification and stage (Section 11.1).
  • Rate, dilution, and agitation (Chapter 12).
  • Coverage, nozzle, and drift (Chapters 13–14).
  • pH, tank-mix incompatibility, and rainfastness.
  • UV breakdown of some insecticides on foliage.
  • Organic matter and soil binding of some herbicides and insecticides.
  • Temperature (some products perform poorly when it is too cold or too hot).

A 3B grub product applied after the larvae have finished feeding will “fail” with no resistance involved. A 7A flush-and-spray that never reached the voids will “fail” the same way. Resistance is the diagnosis after you have a confirmed species, a labeled use, a labeled rate, and still see survivors that breed.

The label still has to allow the pest

Resistance management does not create a new use. 40 CFR 171.103(c)(4)(ii) remains in force: verify that labeling does not prohibit the target pest. You may not rotate to a “fresh MoA” whose pest list omits German cockroaches, or whose site is not your kitchen, or whose method is foliar agricultural only. You may not use a herbicide group rotation partner that is unlabeled for sedges just because crabgrass resistance is in the news. Next pass: labeled rate of a different HRAC group, plus mechanical removal of escapes—not another half-rate of glyphosate under a new brand.
