Selective herbicides and insecticides exist because biology differs. A product that lists crabgrass (Digitaria) will not automatically list yellow nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus), a sedge. A miticide labeled for two-spotted spider mite may not list hemlock woolly adelgid. Read the pest line, not the marketing header.

Complete versus incomplete metamorphosis

Metamorphosis is the change in form as an arthropod develops. The Core cares because life stage changes feeding, habitat, and which labeled tactic works.

Complete metamorphosis (holometabolous) has four stages: egg, larva, pupa, adult. The larva does not look like the adult. Examples: beetles (white grubs are scarab larvae), flies and mosquitoes, moths and butterflies, bees and wasps, fleas, and ant larvae in the nest. Stomach insecticides that must be eaten by a chewing larva will not control a non-feeding pupa. Adult mosquito adulticides (Category 8B) do not replace larvicides in standing water. An insect growth regulator (IGR) that stops a nymph or larva from molting will not knock down every flying adult the same night.

Incomplete (gradual) metamorphosis (hemimetabolous) has three stages: egg, nymph, adult. Nymphs usually resemble smaller, wingless adults and often feed on the same thing in the same place. Weeds have life cycles too: summer annuals (crabgrass) versus winter annuals versus perennials (nutsedge tubers, dandelion taproots). Preemergence crabgrass products fail on a perennial sedge because you identified the plant by “it is green and in the lawn,” not by family. Diseases do not metamorphose, but they have incubation and spore stages that make timing as important as product choice.

The disease triangle

Plant disease is not “a fungus in a jug.” Disease occurs only when three conditions coincide:

  1. A susceptible host (the turf cultivar, the oak, the greenhouse crop).
  2. A virulent pathogen (the fungus, bacterium, virus, or nematode).
  3. A favorable environment (hours of leaf wetness, temperature, poor drainage, high humidity).

That is the disease triangle. Remove any one side and the epidemic fails. Raising mowing height, improving air flow, fixing irrigation that runs at dusk, or planting a resistant cultivar is cultural disease control. Applying a fungicide when the “disease” is summer patch misdiagnosed as drought, or drought misdiagnosed as dollar spot, is both ineffective and a candidate for off-label use if the site/pathogen pair is wrong.

Indoor mold on a school wall after a leak is primarily a moisture problem. A disinfectant labeled as an antimicrobial may be a cleaning tool; it does not replace fixing the leak. Verify the pest is not prohibited

40 CFR 171.103(c)(4)(ii) is the sentence a closed-book Core item can quote almost verbatim: verify that the labeling does not prohibit use of the product to control the target pest. Some labels list pests. Some say “for control of listed insects.” Some prohibit pollinator-attractive blooming weeds, or prohibit use against a pest in a particular growth stage, or prohibit indoor use against a pest that is only labeled outdoors.

  2. What life stage is present, and does the label address that stage?
  3. Is this a pest, a beneficial, or abiotic injury?

  5. Does any statement prohibit this pest, this site, this method, or this timing?

If you cannot answer (1) and (4), do not spray. Collect a sample, use a key, or send it to the Rutgers Plant Diagnostic Laboratory or a county Rutgers New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station (NJAES) office. Guessing is not Core competency.

Worked New Jersey scenarios

Scenario A — look-alike insects. A Category 3A technician treats “scale” on a maple with a horticultural oil. If the insects are a labeled scale, proceed. If the black film is sooty mold from aphid honeydew, oil aimed at “scale” is the wrong organism and may be unlabeled for sooty mold.

Scenario B — weed family. A Category 6A right-of-way crew sprays a postemergence grass herbicide on a stand they called crabgrass. The plants are yellow nutsedge. Nutsedge is not a grass. Unless the label lists nutsedge, the application is inconsistent with labeling.

Scenario C — disease triangle. A Category 3B superintendent wants a dollar-spot spray every calendar Monday. Leaf wetness is 14 hours from night irrigation.
