GPA is not GPM

Gallons per minute (GPM) is how fast liquid leaves a nozzle, a boom, or a pump while the machine is spraying. A chart that says an ISO 04 flat-fan at 40 pounds per square inch (psi) is 0.40 GPM is telling you flow, not field rate.

Gallons per acre (GPA) is how many gallons of spray mixture land on one acre of target at your speed and swath. Labels for boom, aerial, and many turf products state a volume (GPA or gallons per 1,000 square feet) and a product rate (pints per acre, fluid ounces per 1,000 square feet). Calibration sets the volume. Mixing then puts the labeled product into that volume. If the volume is wrong, the product rate is wrong even when the jug math was perfect.

Swath (W) is the treated width that belongs to the GPM you measured:

  • On a broadcast boom, W is nozzle spacing in inches when GPM is per nozzle.
  • On the same boom, W is the full boom width in feet when GPM is total boom flow and you use the 495 constant (below).
  • On a backpack, handheld boom, or spray gun, W is the width you actually wet at the walking pace you will use on the job — not the width you wish you covered.

Do not plug a 20-foot boom into a formula that expects 20-inch spacing. Do not plug total boom GPM into a per-nozzle formula. Those two swaps are how crews invent 200 GPA or 2 GPA on a 20 GPA label.

The 5940 boom formula

The working broadcast equation, used on almost every Extension chart the Core still tests, is:

GPA = (GPM × 5940) / (MPH × W)

  • GPM = gallons per minute from one nozzle (same units the nozzle chart uses)
  • MPH = ground speed in miles per hour at the throttle and gear you will spray
  • W = nozzle spacing in inches
  • 5940 is the unit-conversion constant that turns those units into acres

Where 5940 comes from

You do not have to derive it on PACER, but you must not treat it as a magic GPA.

  • 1 mile per hour = 88 feet per minute (5,280 ft / 60 min)
  • Width in feet = W inches / 12
  • Square feet per minute = 88 × MPH × (W / 12)
  • 1 acre = 43,560 square feet
  • Acres per minute = (88 × MPH × W) / (12 × 43,560) = (MPH × W) / 5940
  • GPA = GPM / acres per minute = (GPM × 5940) / (MPH × W)

If W is in feet and GPM is total boom flow, the constant shrinks by a factor of 12:

GPA = (GPM_total × 495) / (MPH × W_feet)

495 × 12 = 5940. Same physics. Different units. Mixing the constants is a second trap: 495 with inch spacing under-states GPA by a factor of 12; 5940 with foot swath over-states it by a factor of 12.

Canonical boom example (do this with units)

A Mercer County Category 3B boom uses 0.40 GPM nozzles at the pressure on the gauge, 20-inch spacing, 6 MPH:

GPA = (0.40 gal/min × 5940) / (6 miles/hour × 20 inches) GPA = 2,376 / 120 GPA = 19.8 gallons per acre

That is the 20 GPA many turf and ornamental labels want. Record 19.8 GPA (or 20 GPA if you round the way the label bands are written), not the nozzle’s 0.40.

The 49.5 GPA trap — do not copy it

A common closed-book error is to drop GPM and compute 5940 / (MPH × W):

5940 / (6 × 20) = 5940 / 120 = 49.5

That 49.5 is not GPA. It is the constant divided by speed and spacing, which is the same as pretending the nozzle is 1.00 GPM. The real nozzle is 0.40 GPM. Forty percent of 49.5 is 19.8. If you write 49.5 GPA on a 20 GPA label, you will think you need to slow down or shrink tips when the boom is already on rate — or you will mix for 49.5 GPA and under-dose the acre by more than half because the machine is actually putting out 20 gallons. Either way you have confused GPM with GPA. The correct boom math in this setup is about 20 GPA, never 49.5.

Rearrange to choose a nozzle

GPM = (GPA × MPH × W) / 5940

A 6B right-of-way label calls for 15 GPA. You will drive 8 MPH with 20-inch spacing:

GPM = (15 × 8 × 20) / 5940 = 2,400 / 5940 = 0.404 GPM per nozzle

That is an 04 tip at about 40 psi, not a guess from “we always run red nozzles.” If speed or spacing changes, GPM must change.

Speed is linear. Double MPH, cut GPA in half. 0.40 GPM, 20-inch, 10 MPH:

GPA = (0.40 × 5940) / (10 × 20) = 2,376 / 200 = 11.9 GPA

That is an off-rate under-application on a 20 GPA label. Slow down, use a higher-flow tip, or both. Do not “just crank the pressure” and assume flow doubled — section 14.2 shows why that fails.

The 1/128-acre (128ths) method

128 fluid ounces = 1 gallon. If you apply spray to 1/128 of an acre, the ounces you used (or caught from one nozzle) equal GPA.

Boom stopwatch version: time how long the rig takes to travel the 204-foot course at spray speed (at 6 MPH that is 23.2 seconds). Catch one nozzle for that many seconds. Ounces caught = GPA. If you catch 20 ounces, you are at 20 GPA. If you catch 32 ounces, you are at 32 GPA and over the 20 GPA label.

Backpack / gun version: fill to a mark, spray a 340-square-foot strip at the pace, wand height, and pattern you will use on the account, then measure ounces missing from the tank. Those ounces are GPA. A 2-foot wand course is 170 feet of walking.

Turf labels often speak in fluid ounces per 1,000 square feet. One acre is 43.56 of those thousand-square-foot units.

20 GPA = 2,560 oz/acre ÷ 43.56 = 58.8 oz per 1,000 sq ft. A 20 ft × 50 ft test plot is 1,000 sq ft; ounces used on that plot should match the label’s per-1,000 number, not a random “until it looks wet.”

Why New Jersey treats off-rate as two violations

N.J.A.C. 7:30-10.2(a) forbids use inconsistent with the federal or State-registered label. Rate, volume, site, and pest statements on that label are mandatory. FIFRA Section 12(a)(2)(G) is the same idea. 7:30-11.6 prices a 10.2(a) label violation as Use Matrix when there is risk or damage, or $1,000 (minor, 7-day grace) only for a technical label issue with no risk or damage. Dumping extra herbicide on a school lawn is not a technical miss.

N.J.A.C. 7:30-9.9(b) does not wait for a neighbor complaint. Applying with equipment that is not properly calibrated is its own $1,000 non-minor count. 9.9(a) (failure to maintain) is a separate $1,000 non-minor count — worn tips, a lying gauge, and a leaking boom are maintenance as well as calibration.

N.J.A.C. 7:30-6.8 then asks you to write the mix “recipe,” total mixture used, and the size of the treated area when the label gives a rate per area, no later than 24 hours, kept 3 years (termiticide 5 years). Scenario A — 49.5 on the clipboard. A 3B operator in Mercer County times a 6 MPH pass, reads 0.40 GPM on the chart, then writes GPA = 5940 / (6 × 20) = 49.5 and mixes a 50-gallon tank as if it covers about 1 acre. The boom is actually delivering 19.8 GPA, so that tank covers about 2.5 acres. Product per acre is less than half the label. That is 10.2(a) and 9.9(b).

Scenario B — GPM copied as GPA. A 6A crew records “0.4 GPA” because the nozzle box said 0.4. Output is 0.4 GPM, field rate near 20 GPA. The application record under 6.8 is false, and any concentrate calculated as if the field were 0.4 GPA is a severe over-application.
