Synthetic Web, Roundsling, and Fiber-Rope Inspection

Identify the sling type first

Synthetic web slings are flat woven bodies with sewn eyes or fittings. Roundslings contain load-bearing yarn inside a protective cover. Natural or synthetic fiber-rope slings are constructed from rope and have separate rules. The same surface mark can mean different things in each design, so identify the product and read its tag before deciding.

A usable identification must provide the information required for that sling and allow the rigger to find its rated capacity for the hitch and conditions. If the required tag is missing or illegible, remove the sling from service. Color alone is not a reliable capacity system across products and manufacturers.

Synthetic web sling inspection

Lay the sling out in adequate light and examine both faces, both edges, the eyes, stitching, and fittings. Flex it gently to expose hidden folds; do not pull it through bare hands if sharp debris may be embedded.

OSHA 1910.184 requires removal for:

  • acid or caustic burns;
  • melting or charring of any part;
  • snags, punctures, tears, or cuts;
  • broken or worn stitches; or
  • distorted fittings.

Also follow current B30.9 and manufacturer criteria for excessive abrasion, knots, weld spatter, heat damage, UV degradation, missing identification, and other conditions that create doubt. Do not tie a knot to shorten a sling or field-sew damaged webbing.

Some web slings contain red warning yarn. If it is exposed, follow the manufacturer's removal instruction. A sling without visible red yarn is not automatically acceptable: many designs do not use it, and a cut, chemical burn, damaged stitch, or melted area can be rejectable before yarn appears.

Nylon web must not be used where acid or phenolic exposure is present. Polyester and polypropylene web must not be used where caustic exposure is present. Product instructions may impose additional chemical restrictions.

Under OSHA 1910.184, nylon and polyester web slings must not be used above 180°F, and polypropylene web slings must not be used above 200°F. Those are OSHA limits for these web materials, not a universal roundsling temperature chart. Follow any lower manufacturer limit.

Roundsling inspection

The cover protects and identifies the internal load-bearing yarn but does not carry the rated load in the same way as the core. Inspect the tag, cover, seams, eyes, fittings, and any manufacturer indicators. Remove the sling from service for exposed or damaged core yarn; cuts, holes, tears, abrasion, or heat damage that meet the applicable criteria; knots; chemical attack; weld spatter; damaged stitching; distorted fittings; or other conditions that create doubt.

A hard or stiff spot can indicate heat, chemical contamination, or internal damage, but do not diagnose the exact cause from touch alone. Remove it from use for evaluation. Do not open a roundsling cover in the field or attempt to redistribute damaged yarn.

Roundsling capacity and allowed connection diameters come from the tag and manufacturer. Avoid universal claims that every roundsling has the same core color, warning yarn, proof-test factor, or temperature range.

Fiber-rope slings

OSHA requires natural and synthetic fiber-rope slings to use specified rope construction and to be used only within the rated capacities. Under 1910.184, such slings may be used from minus 20°F to plus 180°F without decreasing the working load limit; use outside that range only in accordance with the sling manufacturer's recommendations.

Inspect for abnormal wear, powdered fiber between strands, broken or cut fibers, variations in strand size or roundness, discoloration or rotting, distortion of hardware, and other damage. Open the rope enough to examine internal fibers without damaging it. Knots reduce and unpredictably change capacity and are not a repair or shortening method for a lifting sling.

Splicing and repair must follow the applicable construction rules and be performed only by authorized sources. A tag line or hand rope is not automatically a rated lifting sling.

Fittings and connections

Check that eyes and fittings seat without crushing, cutting, folding, or bunching. A hook, shackle, or pin must provide the bearing geometry required by the sling manufacturer. Protect web and covers from edges that could cut or damage them. Keep tags away from the load in choker or basket arrangements so they are not crushed; this is also a specific CCO practical scoring consideration.

Synthetic materials can be damaged by weld spatter, ultraviolet exposure, grit, paint solvents, and chemicals that leave little obvious evidence. When exposure is unknown, quarantine the sling and obtain manufacturer guidance.

Inspection outcome and storage

Mark or segregate removed gear so it cannot return to service. “Use at half capacity” is not an acceptable field repair. Authorized repair applies only where the standard and manufacturer permit it, followed by required proof testing and identification.

After use, clean by the approved method, dry without damaging heat, and store in a cool, dry, ventilated place away from sunlight, chemicals, sharp objects, and welding. Inspect again if an incident or change during use could have caused damage.

A good exam answer names the actual defect and correct disposition. It does not rely on color, age alone, or an invented percentage.
