Prepare the landing before the lift

The landing area is part of the load path. Confirm it is clear, level enough for the supplied arrangement, accessible to the signal and tag-line team, and able to support the load and concentrated reactions. Look for floor openings, vaults, trenches, soft ground, slopes, utilities, and weak structural decks. A qualified person determines questionable ground or structural capacity.

Place blocking, dunnage, chocks, or a support frame before the load arrives when this can be done safely. The support must be sound, stable, and arranged so the load cannot crush it, roll, or tip. Use the engineered or employer-approved cribbing method. There is no universal OSHA rule that every temporary timber crib must use a 3:1 height-to-base ratio, and generic ratios do not establish material capacity.

Provide clearance for sling removal. Avoid landing directly on the sling unless the approved method specifically provides a safe removal process.

Controlled landing

Communicate the landing sequence and identify one signal person when required. Keep unnecessary people outside the fall zone. Use tag lines only from safe positions and only when they help control orientation.

Lower slowly. Watch the load, supports, sling legs, and hardware. Stop if blocking shifts, the load contacts only one unstable point, a sling traps unexpectedly, or a person enters a pinch zone. Do not use hands or feet to push blocking beneath a suspended load.

“Landed” does not always mean stable. Before releasing rigging, verify the load is:

  • fully supported on the intended points;
  • level or oriented as the plan requires;
  • chocked against rolling;
  • braced against tipping;
  • secured against sliding;
  • closed or restrained if parts can swing;
  • isolated from stored pressure, moving contents, or other energy as required; and

Disconnect methodically

Remove tag lines, pins, shackles, hooks, and sling eyes in an order that does not destabilize the load. Control loose hardware so it cannot fall. Keep hands clear of pinch points in shackle ears, hook throats, and chain.

After disconnecting, hoist the empty hook and rigging slowly. Watch for snags on the load, supports, or structure. Do not drag slings over edges or across the floor. Keep the hook controlled and do not allow loose legs to catch.

Post-use inspection

An item can be damaged during a lift even if it passed pre-use inspection. Check contact points, eyes, fittings, tags, hooks, and hardware for cuts, abrasion, deformation, heat, chemical exposure, or unusual movement. Report overload, shock, snagging, electrical contact, or dropped hardware.

Segregate defective gear immediately. Cleaning and storage

Follow manufacturer instructions. Remove dirt and abrasive grit without chemicals that attack the material. Dry synthetic and fiber gear without excessive heat. Protect wire rope with the approved lubricant; do not use a lubricant that conceals defects or attracts harmful contamination. Chain and hardware should be clean enough for inspection and protected from corrosion as directed.

Store gear:

  • off the ground on suitable racks;
  • in a dry, ventilated area;
  • away from sunlight, chemicals, welding, heat, and sharp edges;
  • without tight bends, knots, or crushing;
  • organized so identification remains visible; and
  • separated by service status.

Return pins and components to their matched assemblies. Do not mix shackle pins or lifting-device parts.
