Practical-exam knot boundary

The CCO Rigger Level I practical has a Basic Knots task. Candidates tie five knots using one or more rope diameters and the supplied PVC pipe or eyebolt when needed:

  • sheet bend;
  • clove hitch;
  • inside bowline;
  • square or reef knot; and
  • two half hitches.

These are demonstrations of correct rope form and dressing. They do not turn the test rope into a rated lifting sling. OSHA prohibits shortening slings with knots, and wire-rope sling eyes cannot be made with knots. Do not memorize a claim that every knot retains exactly 50% or loses 40–60% of strength; performance varies by rope, knot, dressing, and loading.

Rope terms

The standing part carries away from the knot. The working or running end is manipulated to form the knot. A bight is a U-shaped bend that does not cross itself; a loop crosses. Dressing arranges every part neatly in its intended path. Setting removes excess slack so the knot takes its final shape.

On the practical, tie deliberately, dress the knot where the proctor can see it, and say “Done” only when ready for evaluation.

Sheet bend

The sheet bend joins two ropes of different diameters. The current practical directions require the larger-diameter rope to be the bight end. Bring the smaller rope through the bight, around both legs of the bight, and under its own standing part. Dress the knot so both free ends finish on the same side.

Common errors are using the smaller rope as the bight, creating a square knot, leaving the tail on the opposite side, or failing to snug all parts.

The sheet bend is a tested knot; do not treat it as an approved way to create a longer load-bearing lifting sling.

Clove hitch

A clove hitch is two successive turns around the supplied pipe with a crossing part between them. The practical note requires the two free portions of rope to pass each other and be contained by the loops on the PVC pipe.

Dress the two turns so they lie neatly and grip the anchor. Avoid stacking the turns, tying two half hitches instead, or leaving the crossing section outside. In field tag-line use, a clove hitch can roll or slip depending on direction, surface, and changing tension, so use it only where the approved method calls for it and add any specified backup.

Inside bowline

A bowline forms a fixed loop. “Inside” describes the free end's final position: the current CCO scoring note says the free end must be situated inside the loop.

Form a small loop in the standing part, pass the working end through it, around the standing part, and back through the small loop. Dress it so the collar closes around the standing part and the free end lies inside the large loop.

Common errors include an outside tail, a slip bowline, a crossed collar, or insufficient dressing. The bowline should not be substituted for a rated sling eye.

Square or reef knot

A square knot joins two ends of similar rope for light binding: right over left, then left over right, or the mirror image. The practical note says the free ends must be on the same side; the candidate may use both ropes or a single rope.

A granny knot has both half knots in the same direction and is incorrect. A square knot can capsize or spill under unsuitable loading and is not an overhead lifting connection.

Two half hitches

Two half hitches secure the running end around the standing part after passing around an anchor. Tie both in the same sense so they form a compact pair. CCO's note says the running end must cross over the standing end for the second hitch.

Do not confuse two half hitches with the clove hitch on the pipe. Dress and set each hitch without crossing unnecessary parts.

Tag-line purpose and selection

A tag line helps control rotation or orientation from a safe position. OSHA 1926.1431 requires tag lines when necessary to control a personnel platform. Material lifts use them according to the lift plan and conditions.

Select a clean rope of adequate length and condition, compatible with electrical and environmental hazards. “Synthetic” does not mean electrically safe; wet or contaminated rope can conduct, and no tag line makes encroachment on power-line clearance acceptable.

Attach only at an approved point where the line cannot damage the load, foul rigging, or pull hardware open. There is no universal rule to attach at the point farthest from center of gravity; follow the control plan and load geometry.

Handler position

Keep the line free of knots and loops around people. Never wrap it around a hand, wrist, arm, waist, or fixed structure. Use a grip that can be released. Stand outside the fall zone and away from the load's likely swing, pinch points, and the bight of the line.

Maintain enough distance to control the load without being pulled toward it. Walk the clear route; do not back into an obstruction. Do not fight an uncontrollable load. Release the line and give the stop signal if wind, motion, snagging, or equipment movement creates danger.

A tag line controls orientation; it does not correct a misplaced hook, unstable center of gravity, bad hitch, or side pull.

Study and practice method

Practice each knot from both a diagram and memory. After tying, trace the rope path with a finger and compare it with the scoring cue. Rotate the finished knot to recognize it from different views. Then practice a consistent sequence under the overall 60-minute exam limit without inventing per-knot time limits.

For tag-line questions, choose the answer that preserves release, distance, clearance, and communication. Reject any choice that wraps the line around a person, enters the fall zone, or relies on the tag line to overcome a rigging defect.
