6.1 Traps, Trap Seals & Trap Arm Requirements

1. What a Trap Must Do (IPC 1002.2)

A trap is a fitting or device that holds a trap seal — a body of standing water that blocks sewer gas, vermin and odors from entering the building while still passing waste freely. IPC Section 1002.2 imposes three design requirements:

  • Self-scouring. The trap must be shaped so the discharge velocity sweeps the trap clean on every use. This is why the smooth-bore P-trap survived and the pot-shaped drum trap did not.
  • No interior partitions. Fixture traps may not use internal baffles to form the seal unless the trap is integral with the fixture (the water closet is the classic example) or is built of an approved corrosion- and degradation-resistant material.
  • Slip joints only in three places. Slip joints must use an approved elastomeric gasket and may be installed only at the trap inlet, the trap outlet, and within the trap seal. A slip joint buried in a concealed wall downstream of the trap outlet is a violation.

A seal shallower than 2 inches is destroyed by the smallest pressure fluctuation. A seal deeper than 4 inches on an ordinary fixture is equally wrong: the extra water slows the flush velocity, the trap stops scouring itself, and solids settle out. A deep-seal trap is a legitimate product — it is simply reserved by the code for the accessible-fixture designs it names, and for the special uses (such as evaporation-prone floor drains) the code official approves.

3. One Fixture, One Trap (IPC 1002.1)

Each plumbing fixture must be separately trapped by a liquid-seal trap, and a fixture shall not be double trapped. Two dimensional limits ride along with that rule:

  • Vertical: from the fixture outlet down to the trap weir, not more than 24 inches. (This is the tailpiece limit — a long unvented vertical drop turns the fixture into a self-siphoning column.)
  • Horizontal: not more than 30 inches, measured from the centerline of the fixture outlet to the centerline of the trap inlet.

Clothes washer standpipes are individually trapped and must extend not less than 18 inches and not more than 42 inches above the trap weir (IPC Section 802.4.3).

Exception 2 is how a two- or three-bowl sink legally shares one trap: the outermost waste outlets must fall inside the 30-inch spread and the bowls must be within 6 inches of one another in depth. Be careful here — the Uniform Plumbing Code states this rule differently, permitting one trap to serve up to three single-compartment sinks, laundry tubs or lavatories of the same depth with the trap centrally located. Maryland adopts the IPC at COMAR 09.20.01, so answer from the IPC wording.

5. Sizing the Trap (IPC 1002.5 and Table 709.1)

Section 1002.5 gives two commands: the trap must be large enough to drain the fixture rapidly and not smaller than Table 709.1, and "a trap shall not be larger than the drainage pipe into which the trap discharges." That second sentence is the one candidates blow. Oversizing a trap does not "help drainage" — it drops the velocity below the self-scouring threshold and it dumps a large slug into a smaller pipe.

6. Trap Arm: Maximum Distance from Trap to Vent

The IPC does not use the words "trap arm." It calls the run the fixture drain, and Section 909.1 measures it from the trap weir to the vent fitting as a developed length, which includes the equivalent length of every fitting in the run.

Section 909.2 explains why the table stops where it does: the total fall in a fixture drain due to pipe slope shall not exceed the diameter of the fixture drain, and except for water closets the vent connection may not be below the weir of the trap. Run the arithmetic in the fourth column and the design intent is obvious — at 1/4 in. per foot, the table lengths for the 1-1/4, 1-1/2 and 2-inch traps produce a fall of exactly one pipe diameter. Push a 2-inch fixture drain to 10 feet at 1/4 in. per foot and the fall becomes 10 x 0.25 = 2.5 inches, which drops the vent opening below the trap weir, converts the vent into a waste line, and self-siphons the trap.

Exception: the developed length from trap weir to vent fitting for self-siphoning fixtures such as water closets is not limited by Table 909.1.

Exam Trap: The most common wrong answer on trap-arm questions is a set of shorter distances — 2 ft 6 in. for 1-1/4 in., 3 ft 6 in. for 1-1/2 in., 5 ft for 2 in., 6 ft for 3 in. and 10 ft for 4 in. Those are the Uniform Plumbing Code Table 1002.2 values, and they are wrong for Maryland. COMAR 09.20.01 adopts the International Plumbing Code, so the governing numbers are 5, 6, 8, 12 and 16 feet from IPC Table 909.1. If an option set contains both families of numbers, the larger IPC set is the answer.

8. Trap Seal Protection (IPC 1002.4.1)

Trap seals of emergency floor drain traps and trap seals subject to evaporation must be protected by one of four methods:

  1. Potable water-supplied trap seal primer valve conforming to ASSE 1018 (Section 1002.4.1.1).
  2. Reclaimed or graywater-supplied trap seal primer valve, also conforming to ASSE 1018, with water quality per the manufacturer (Section 1002.4.1.2).
  3. Waste water-supplied trap primer device conforming to ASSE 1044 (Section 1002.4.1.3).
  4. Barrier-type trap seal protection device conforming to ASSE 1072, installed per the manufacturer's instructions (Section 1002.4.1.4).

For all three primer-valve types, the discharge pipe must connect to the trap above the trap seal, on the inlet side of the trap — never into the outlet leg, where the primer water would simply run to the sewer.

9. Building Traps and the Remaining Chapter 10 Rules

  • Building (house) traps are prohibited. IPC Section 1002.6 is one flat sentence with no exception. A building trap is a running trap installed in the building drain ahead of the sewer connection; it collects solids, it needs a fresh-air inlet to work at all, and it blocks the free circulation of air the modern vent system depends on. Older Maryland row-house and Baltimore City stock still contains them, and removing one during a repair is normal practice — but you may not install a new one. Watch for exam options that add "except where local conditions require" — that qualifier lives in other model codes, not in IPC 2018.
  • Trap setting and protection (1002.7): traps are set level with respect to the trap seal and, where necessary, protected from freezing. A trap racked out of level has an effectively shallower seal on one side.
  • Recess for trap connection (1002.8): a recess for an underground trap, such as a bathtub trap in slab construction, must have sides and a bottom of corrosion-resistant, insect- and verminproof construction.
  • Acid-resisting traps (1002.9): a vitrified clay or other brittleware acid-resisting trap installed underground must be embedded in concrete extending 6 inches beyond the bottom and sides of the trap.
